Damo
Hi, I thought I'd give you UK guys some timber supply companys that I have used in the past. Most of these can supply any wood you want, and can plane and treat them to your wishes! I've found all of them to be excellent value. These are based mainly in the North West, but will deliver throughout the country! http://www.chadwicks4timber.co.uk/ http://www.ge-robinson.co.uk/ http://www.jastimber.co.uk/ http://www.wjlewis.co.uk/ Cheerz Damo
thomasteven
None of those sites were any good for finding wood suitable for guitar making. At least I dind't see it anywhere.
Damo
they don't list them on their site, but they do stock various types of Alder/Ash/Maple which you can get prices for if you email them - but then again, your in canada so you wont be using them anyway! eddiefletcher
Best one I've ever found and used un the UK is Good Timber Northampton They have a massive range and are great with pricing. If you ask them nicely they usually plane all round the timber for free as well. In the past I've bought Ash, Maple, Jarrah, Mahogany and several really nice bits of Spalted Maple. Give them a go! Thoughtless 7
Thanks man...I've been wondering where to get wood from on this side of the pond!
Vendelcrow
Nice info Damo, Thats what it's all about, helping each other with information and finding sources for guitar supplies. Don't bother about the reply from thomasteven. It was just rude, childish and used to gather posts.
Digideus
Excellent stuff guys. Ive been waiting for this info for ages!!! I commend your effort damo. And to add my own... there are many historic sawmills in the strood area in kent who can supply mahogany, wenge, maple and ash. No specific name at the moment. Theres also one or two guys on Ebay, Jerwood timber being the most prolific I know of. He does Body blanks for £20 and neck peices for £2, but they only measure 10mm so you will need to laminate about 7 together. may i suggest this thread be added to the respective place on this site for UK suppliers? qwerty55
I can also recommend Henry Venables Timber Merchant. Have always been helpful to me and offer a good selection of wood. Edited November 17, 2006 by qwerty55
biliousfrog
Here's a place in Norwich: http://www.northheighamsawmills.co.uk/ They have a dedicated guitar wood section just inside the door plus a large selection of rough cut timber including exotics & a reasonable selection of bindings & veneers. Be warned that they close at 11am 'ish on a saturday....I arrived at 10.45 a few weeks ago & got kicked out before I could grab anything. Prostheta
I can vouch for North Heigham if you're considering buying a load of rough cut lumber, storing it and drying it through like I am :-D The wood in the small piece shop is dry but you have to be lucky to find exactly what you need. That said, we did come away with some nice looking black walnut for my wife's chambered LP build!
