Neck Question

I need to make a PRS style set neck for my current project. One where the neck is .5 to .75 inches thicker at the heel so the tongue can extend under the neck humbucker..

I don't want to use mahogany and I have a bunch of 3/4 rock maple already. Could I simply laminate 2 layers together down at the heel? or would that be weaK?

I've never actually done it, but I've thought about doing it before. I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work. Just make sure you have a good glue joint.

A lot of factory necks are laminated there as well as at the headstock. Shouldn't be a problem. If you want to be extra careful you could dowel or biscuit the joint but I don't really see it as necessary.

I've got a biscuit cutter, that might not be a bad idea. But i'm thinking if there is a decent amount of surfce contact, that joint won't be going anywhere..

If you glue on a heel and route away all of the top lamination, you are simply adding an extra glue line to the neck joint, which won't gain you much cosmetically or structurally (sp?).

You could flip the maple and laminate a thicker heeled blank that way.

That's what I was thinking, if you have 4/4 stock then flip it and go with a 3-piece laminated neck. If the wood is flatsawn, you'll end up with a quartersawn neck.

I wondered about that too.. I was trying to get by with the wood that I had.. but i'd rather do it right than to go to all that rouble and have it break later.
