Need 3 volunteers

Brian

Recommended Posts

I have aquired some Sprage Difilm Mylar paper radial lead capacitors from the 50's and 60's. What I am looking for are 3 volunteers that would be willing to swap out the .047 capacitor on their own guitar and report back any differences they may or may not find in terms of sound quality. These capacitors are very large compaired to the modern ones as shown below with the antique NOS pictured on the right.

I'm willing to try too. I've got a cheap Strat-copy, which I might as well use for something, so why not. I live in Sweden though... If you're still interested send me a mail g_hjelmare@hotmail.com.

Was thinking of trying this myself - I've a dead Burns 12 with BIG 60's caps and was thinking of moving one to my tele.

What size cap do you need to do it?

Good question. I'll open up the control panel later and have a look. How about some before and after mp3s to add a little more interest to the experiment, and involve other readers in a blind poll, perhaps?

I'll drop you a pm later, ta.

Got the push-push pot discussion but it's kinda hard to e-mail you a cap bro :D I need your real address, you know the one where you park your computer? B)

I didn't know I drove one...

ya... that's what a TBX does isn't it? puts a cap and resistor on there so depending on how you turn the balance pot you get a hotter or duller sound... i like to call it the "deep fried or microwaved" control :D

Ok, I got the cap some time ago. As far as I can hear, the clean sounds warmer, or fuller with the new cap than with the original, and with distortion it sounds less muddy with the new cap. If anyone wants recordings of the guitar before and after the change, just give me some way of uploading the stuff (can't mail it, too big), and I'll get to that in a few days.

I think I lost the recordings in a hard drive crash a few days ago. I haven't had time to see what's happened, what can be saved, and so on, but they're probably gone. I'll try to get some time to see if they are though, cause I'm not sure.

Sorry, the water pipes to our house broke down, so we were without water for 4 days, so I haven't had time to get the files up yet. I'm in a bit of trouble with my computers too, so I don't know when I can get the files up, but I think we may be looking at something like thursday or friday.

Ok, I finally got the stuff up. It's all mp3-files renamed to .xps, so you'll have to change that. I recored with the tone knob at 10, 5 and 0 respectively.
