Here's a short blurb on it from Popular Science.

PopSci

They had an article on this a few months back. Surprisingly they also had an article on a killer 'cane hitting New Orleans and flooding the city because of the lack of sufficient protection around the city......I'm sure they never expected it to happen this soon.

Here you go guys. I'll check around because there was a whole website dedicated to this but it's intense.

EDIT: Here's where I heard it before. My dad listens to this show. Now I know a lot of the crap on this show is just laughable, but when you hear about this on the Discovery channel, you have to give it a second look.

http://www.coasttocoastam.com/shows/2005/01/21.html small article here.

There lol. All but the last 2 are small blurbs about it. What really pisses me off about natural disasters is we have all this technology that monitor but no one wants to do anything about it until after the fact. Maybe I should run for office :D

Southpa,

I know what you mean, "When the Levee Breaks" was buzzing in my head when I was listening to the news on the radio. I've also been running Randy Newman's "Louisiana 1927" through my head. He does a great solo version on a KCRW compilation disc.

What has happened down here is the wind have changed

Clouds roll in from the north and it started to rain

Rained real hard and rained for a real long time

Six feet of water in the streets of Evangeline

The river rose all day

The river rose all night

Some people got lost in the flood

Some people got away alright

The river have busted through cleard down to Plaquemines

Six feet of water in the streets of Evangeline

Louisiana, Louisiana

They're tryin' to wash us away

They're tryin' to wash us away

Louisiana, Louisiana

They're tryin' to wash us away

They're tryin' to wash us away

President Coolidge came down in a railroad train

With a little fat man with a note-pad in his hand

The President say, "Little fat man isn't it a shame what the river has

done

To this poor <farmer's> land."

Louisiana, Louisiana

They're tryin' to wash us away

They're tryin' to wash us away

Louisiana, Louisiana

They're tryin' to wash us away

They're tryin' to wash us away

Hey, I just wanted to give a shout out to thegarehanman. I know how much this sucks and how helpless you feel. My hometown was hit by a massive tornado when I was away at college and it took out most of the town I grew up with, including the first house I ever called home. I know what happened in my town pales in comparison to the level of destruction down your way, but I know how it feels to watch everything you care about be taken away by the raw power of nature.

I was sitting down to a nice plate of BBQ ribs tonight after a long day at work and was watching desperate people trying to get rescued from the floodwaters in New Orleans on Fox News. One of my favorite meals just sort of started to taste like mush, like I shouldn't enjoy it or something. You just can't watch people suffer while you're sitting enjoying a good meal, especially when you know that could be you or someone you care about.

Everyone, just pray for those people down there. I'm not asking for prayers for Americans or rich people or poor people or religious people, just people in crisis. It's not getting any better down there, and it'll be years before New Orleans is back to its glory days. Hopefully not too long, but the people down there matter first.

mmmm man I heard one guy jumped to his death in the dome, A cop was shot in the head by looters, and msnbc showed 2 female cops looting walmart with the rest of the crooks... I figured the levy would give and we would lose the big easy for a while, actually forever (it'll never be the same) but I didn't even think about the stress hitting people so quick. I figured a week before people started hurting themselves and each other. Man its sad. and that poor fella they keep showing who lost his wife when the house split in half and he couldn't hold on to her....... that brought a tear to my eye.

the sad part is there are so many poor desperate people who live down there as it is. Now there is nothing. Its like everyone just needs to leave and come back in a couple of months. The pictures are so bad. I saw video of slidell this morning, they said 10-15k large trees are down mostly on homes. I hope our buddy is ok.

I do have a tech question, maybe someone can explain. They are saying some people are "Internetting" from there (New Orleans) my question is how? no phones, no cell towers and no power..... is there a new "Magic" modem I dont know about?

I'd guess wireless by sat-phone. That seems to be the only method for long distance communication right now.

Or ham radio via Echolink/WIRES or HF. The Salvation Army's SATERN system and the ARES/RACES system are the only means of long distance communication besides sat phone right now, and only the major news organizations really have those available.

Terrible storm, all the way around. As much as we needed the last 2 days of rain here, I would have preferred it come from the west instead of the south. It was still technically a tropical storm yesterday. Amazing what Mother Nature can do: the platypus, the venus flytrap, and catastrophic hurricanes. She's one freaky chick.

I've watched a little news (FNC, MSNBC). The devestation in NOLA, Mobile and Biloxi areas is surreal. The cargo trucks scattered like a childs toys in a sand box; the floating casinos washed ashore (some as far as 1/4 mile ashore!), the rooftops of homes being the only visible part, like looking down on a Monopoly game board. So amazing, but in a bad way. The levee breaks the day after the storm must feel like salt in the wound to the NOLA residents.

I just tried to contact a friend at Peavey to make sure they made it through the storm. Security personel are answering the phones. No one is in the office this week. Peavey is in Meridian, MS- about 200 miles north of NOLA. I guess the storm was only a Cat. 3 when it hit them. Yeah.....*only* a Cat. 3.

It'll be a long time fixing the Gulf Coast. And while lost lives can't be brought back, I'm sure the residents down there will bring back their cities and towns. I wish them the best for the future.

P.S.- F**k looters.

Here are some pictures I just found of my town. It may look bad to you, but they are relieving to me. Some of them are within a mile of my home. I read that the subdivision across from mine got some flooding. I have no clue if mine did. I think most of the houses in my neighborhood are higher than the ones across from us. http://www.wwltv.com/forums/viewtopic.php?...r=asc&start=120

Russ, glad to hear you're relieved. I know what it's like when something like that happens and you want to know if your house is ok. 12 years ago my mom, brother, and I were out for dinner when we saw a tornado touch down on the horizon in the area where we lived. It was a nightmare until we got home. We were lucky to have been spared the damage (we would have lost everything had it touched down where we lived), but others were not so lucky. I spent the rest of that night helping others as best I could until relief efforts got organized and they asked for the volunteers to head out due to gas leaks.

Remember the Alamo, and God Bless Texas...

On TV I saw a guy walk out of Wal-Mart with shopping cart filled with food and clothes.......Somehow I could understand this......as it's probably all he had left (or just acquired)

Somehow I couldn't feel the same for guy next to him hoaling 62" TV out of the same store. :D

Hopefully some good will come out of all this. Some Federal funds, development projects, employement opportunities. 3rd generation welfare families is also not way to go. (as I know there are many in that area.)

Houses can be rebuilt, water can be pumped away.....but lost ones will only come back in memories. That's the sad part out of all this.

Nature is still a powerful MF.

I dont know whats happening here, (south east georgia) but the people are freaking out and Swamping the gas stations, in 2 hrs gas went from 273 to 339 (regular) I think its price gouging, I need gas but I'm not dealing with that mess, I'll go out at 3am to the 24 hr place (if there is any left).....

Yeah, all the oil and gas companies are once again engaging in disaster profiteering. Bastards. Bad thing is that the stations are only making 1 cent per gallon in profit, too.

Bush has opened up the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, but it should have been opened weeks ago in anticipation of the hurricane season. I'm not trying to make a political statement or pass blame on anyone, but our government, both Republicans and Democrats, should have been better prepared for this kind of disaster. We have all the crude oil we need, but no way to get it refined.

Also, about the looting, Wal-Mart authorized its managers in those counties to open the store doors and let anyone take whatever they can carry, especially food. They're not going out of business over letting a few stores be "looted", and they'd rather do that than have people breaking in or letting stuff go to waste while people are starving.

i think that is an extremely nice thing for wal-mart to do...if it's true

but i doubt the news around here would ever report that...they would rather yell "DISASTER" as loud as they can
