SwedishLuthier
A 5 string custom bass OK, this is a 100% custom bas, customer design and everything. One of the customer’s objectives was to have as much native woods as possible. I ended up using quite odd spices, but it worked out well. The body is meant to resemble a Dan-O longhorn bass, but with an offset shape (picked up from the J-bas) and a downward pointing upper horn for better balance. The beach wood that the body is made out of is very heavy. To lighten the bas the body is chambered. It is actually clam shell type of chambered, meaning it made out of two halves that is hollowed out and glued together. The neck is made out of 7 laminations made from maple and oak. The back of the neck is finished with oil and wet sanded with the oil to 1200 grit. You can’t see it in the photos, but the neck is attached using a set net type tennon, but with stainless steel machine screws and steel bushings in the neck (sorry no picks). The inlays are custom MOP bas clef and dots. The double MOP dots mark fret 12. The head is slightly inspired by Gibson head shapes. It also picks up the arc that the upper body horn makes. The head angle is 15 degrees. The head and the neck are bound in white plastic bindings. The pickups are active EMG, J- and P-bas, running on twin 9V batteries. The controls are two volumes and one tone. Everything is finished using StewMac Colourtone water based lacquer, in a distinctive Dan-O style white/black burst. The sound of this bas is very good. The active EMGs contribute a lot to the thundering sound of the B-string. EMGs are my first pick for bases! I can’t really say that the chambers add any acoustic qualities to the amplified sound, but the bas is quite loud unplugged and I credit that to the chambers. johnsilver
Here is an SG style guitar I made for my middle son. He lives in Melbourne, Australia with his lovely Aussie wife. We are going to visit them and I'm bringing the guitar with us. He doesn't know I'm bringing it. This is my second guitar but has many firsts for me as a new builder, for example, a maple top, a set neck, a laminated neck, MOP inlay, color finish, use of ebony, bound neck and headstock. There are many people on this forum who's work and advice contributed to me being able to make this guitar. Here are a few: Drak for his quality and humor, Hyunsu for his approach to work, Setch for his LP tutorial and advice, Clavin for his encouragement and help with inlay issues, and Albertop for his beautiful SG. There are many others. Thanks to all. It is modelled on a Gibson SG Supreme with some modifications for choice. Anyway, here are some specs: body: mahogany base with a curly maple drop top neck: three piece laminated mahogany fretboard and headplate: ebony inlays: white MOP, custom design on the headstock binding: single ply white celluloid nitrate on fretboard and headstock bridge: Tone Pros TOM tailpiece: Tone Pros tuners: Gotoh keystones pickups: Seymour Duncan JB (bridge) and Jazz (neck) controls: 1 volume, 1 tone, 3 way switch strings: DR Tite Fit 10s scale: Gibson 24 3/4" (actual is 24 5/8") nut: bone finish: nitrocellulose lacquer (cherry red toner under clear lacquer) full frontal view closeup of front with figured maple headstock closeup of neck heel Here are a few more pictures: top and hardware front up close full shot of back
