"hendershot" - My Take On The Whamola

This is a project I recently built in my Sculpture I class last semester. Its been a while since ive logged in to the forums, so i don't know if anyone here remembers me, but Ive been lurkin!

Heres the specs

chambered Walnut body w/ zebrawood top

maple/walnut thru-neck (42" from nut to bridge)

snakewood fretboard

steel nut

part I found lying on my floor (possibly from a lamp?) I used for the bridge

single coil squier strat pickup

3/4 scale contrabass D-string

No Sound clips as of yet, but when the whether gets nicer I'm gonna record some stuff at my buddy's house

Woohoo! Whamola!

They're, like Xanthus said, a one string standup bass you whack with a stick, BUT with a important differnce. There's some sort of mechanism (i imagine it can vary) that bends the string mounted on the headstock. You play it by holding the mechanism with your left hand, bending it to change the pitch and whacking it with a stick with your other hand. Or you can just play it on the fretboard.

I was thinking about making one sometime. They seem so fun to play.

How are you making the string bender? (if at all)

You can hear it better in this video. Les' band kinda drowns out the whamola.

I think the Les method is good. Simple and effective, really. What might be cool is a racheting or pin system on the whammy bar where you could hold the string at a certain pitch and be able to move your hand down the fretboard. Basically like a capo, I guess.
