I found a used Dayton 12 1/2" thickness planer for 75 bucks. has anyone ever used or heard of this brand? is there anything I should look out for when I go and check it out?

Nevre heard of the brand, however:

Dust extraction. You'll definitely need it.

Also don't try putting figured timber through it.

for what purpose do i need dustextraction? simply for convenience (keeping the area clean) or as a matter of necessity? Also I have no intention for planing figured woods :D

For starters, the smaller units clog up if the waste is not extracted. It'll build up and jam up the blade, wreck your timber etc etc

Then there's the while "don't breath that **** in" side of things
