Knightro Guitars 2015

Hello everyone! I've just started a new build and might have 2 more lined up, so I figured I may as well do a consolidated thread to keep things somewhat easier to organize. The first new build is for my cousin. He's an incredible guitarist and would like to step into the multiscale pool, so I decided to give it a shot. I was able to play a few multiscales at NAMM and fell in love, so I'm really excited to build one.

Specs: 25"-26" scale
Black limba body with wenge top
           Wenge neck
           Black & white ebony fretboard
           Hipshot Solo bridges
           Hipshot Grip-lock tuners
           Seymour Duncan Pegasus/Sentient pickups

So off we go!

With the body roughly shaped, my next task is to glue the wenge top laminate on. I'll get the neck blank cleaned up and ready to work as well. Thanks for looking!

As soon as I saw that board, I knew what needed to be done. This guitar will have a twin, all padauk. I was reading some old RAD threads and felt inspired, so I'm attempting to channel some of his neon orange mojo.

Basic specs are the same for both, but I think I'll go for something DiMarzio-flavored for pickups for the padauk guitar.

Padauk dust has a life of its own. Once you set it free, it can never be completely tamed.:D I see orange footprints in your future.

Some more pics of the woods involved here.

The grain on the neck piece is pretty much perfect.

Flatsawn for the top. I'm going to resaw this piece on Saturday.

And for the padauk guitar:

I've been saving this piece of pau ferro for a few years now, finally found the right guitar for it. It'll get ebony binding rather than blind slots.

The grain on the top edge is my favorite part, I think.

Elaborate on cutting blind slots please.

Sure! For the ebony board, I had a person with a CNC cut my slots, stopping 2mm short of either edge. That way, the board acts as its own binding. In the case of the pau ferro board, the sides were cut 2mm narrower than my intended measurement, so when I add my binding, I get the same effect.

That's it, I completely hate you. JOKING! Wonderful wood and builds. I'll be watching this with great interest. I know, I should be working on mine, but current situations do not allow it, so I'll live vicariously through you.

Looking forward to see this builds, I really like the black and white fretboard those thin black lines going to be really stunning when finished. that padaouk also looks quite amazing, but how will that change over the years? will it still have that amazing vibrant color or will it turn to more brownish?

Another way I've seen it done is to cut your fretboard, trim binding width strips off each side, slot, and then glue the strips right back on.

So tomorrow, I'll be able to hit the sides with a flush trim and see how it looks. Thanks for reading!

A few pics from today's little bit of shop time:

Unclamped, pardon the caveman look. I had to hand cut a few spots to get the clamps on.

Do I see an arm bevel coming that includes the entire bass side?

SR

You do indeed!

I was just about to say - you've missed a bit! :D
