verhoevenc
Hey guys. I'm about to throw some back-straps on some bass headstocks and was curious what people's preferred bass headstock thicknesses were? I've seen them all over the board on the internet, anywhere from 12mm, to 5/8, even up to 17 and 17.5mm. I personally am inclined to go thicker, thoughts? Andyjr1515
Hi, Chris The limiting factor is usually the length of the tuner posts... Too thick and there often isn't enough room to fully wind the strings or, in the case of top screwed collar designs, enough catch on the screw thread. verhoevenc
Hey Andy. I'm aware of what they limiting factors are and have contacted Hipshot to find out what their specs are in this area. However, regardless of limiting factors I was wondering if folks had preferences here, and why. Chris
verhoevenc
here's what the Hipshot folks had to say: "Our Ultralite Bass tuners will comfortably fit a 11/16" or 17.5mm spacing. The Classic style tuner will accept an even wider headstock up to a 3/4" or 19mm." Cool cool, Chris
killemall8
Interesting. The hipshot guitar tuners have an abnormally short post, and headstocks have to be .6" or less.
Andyjr1515
Just measured a couple of my homebuilts. My OM acoustic is 14.0mm and the Bubinga fretless bass is 16.5mm .... so I'm not a great one to ask Actually, the core wood for both is around 14mm, but the fretless has an ebony plate top and bottom, giving it the extra depth. Prostheta
Headstocks can be thicker if you recess the tuner bushes. My 1951-5 P-Bass ended up 18mm.
