Catch22Kid
Starting to look like a guitar. Finally. She's all glued up. Picked up some rasps and a surform to do the rest of the body and neck shaping.

Now I just have to resist the urge to pull the clamps off too soon and see how she feels in playing position.
Catch22Kid
Well, the rasp and I had a little playdate. Also, yes, I know, my house is a disaster. I have a 4 year old walking hurricane. Gotta even out the belly carve a bit, but I'm pretty happy with how it's looking so far.
ADFinlayson
I have an 18-month-old so I can relate. God knows how I have time to make guitars!
Catch22Kid
Alright, hoping to make some progress on this project this weekend. All my parts are in. Anybody got any tips on drilling straight string-thru holes without a drill press?
Prostheta
Spend as much time marking out as you can on both sides. Drill through just over halfway from each side. Make a pilot mark for the point of your drill bit and ensure that you're using bits with a point that is concentric.
Bizman62
A template might also help, at least in aligning the holes. Even a piece of cardboard with needle holes is easier to put into the right location on either side than trying to draw a line and measure one by one. - Did that make sense at all? ADFinlayson
I did it with a hand drill on my first build out of necessity - get 2 straight blocks of wood, place one in front and one to the side of the drill and use them to reference square - keep them close enough so that your drill knocks them out of the way when you get in far enough, drill the outer Es all the way through, then drill the 4 inner holes half way through. On the back, divide the distance between the 2 outer holes by 5 and mark 4 holes between then drill through until your holes meet in the middle. Catch22Kid
Quite a bit of progress today. Firstly, filled a big chunk of tear out from being an idiot with the old router with clear epoxy. It shall serve as a constant reminder not to do stupid stuff with power tools. Catch22Kid
Finished up the body shaping and slimmed the neck heel down a bit. Drilled string-thru holes and started boring out the tuner holes.
Catch22Kid
Bought this little drill jig. Works pretty well. My string thru holes are just a tiny bit off, but I can live with it. Worked really well for the tuner holes.
Catch22Kid
And recessed these Schaller style strap locks a bit. I'll have to open up the edges of the recess just a touch, but I think it looks pretty nice. Got a bunch of spots I shooouuuld fill in. But I think I've decided to leave them, as reminders of the problems I've run into throughout the build, and the will to overcome them. "Growing pains" I suppose. Catch22Kid
Got the tuners test fitted. Didn't want to blow a ton of cash, so most of my parts came from Amazon and guitarfetish. It'll be getting a set of GFS Fat PAT's. I have a set of their tele hot rails and I love them. Hopefully the Fat PAT's impress me as well. Catch22Kid
And a little mock up. She's all sanded to 150. Gotta route, and sand through the grits up to 400. Then she's getting either Danish or Tung oil, depending on my mood that day.

The tweak on the neck heel makes a big difference to the look, but also to the playing feel.

Prostheta
Nicely repaired though. Definitely take more care with power tools since you can't replace fingertips with epoxy. Well, you CAN however....
Catch22Kid
Thanks for the kind words, fellas. It doesn't hold a candle to much of the work I've seen on here, but I'm proud of it. Wish I could've gotten all cream pups, rather than the zebra scheme, but GFS doesn't make them that way unfortunately. I do think it looks nice though.
