Whilst waiting to get that Buckeye V finished, here's a quick round of "name that wood". A small selection of fretboard blanks just delivered for my next batch of builds (customs and a stock)...

Easy! Stripy, Madonna and blobby. What do I win?

Arrived at the workshop: BKP Painkiller w/ Aged Cream coils and custom 16 degree baseplate for the Buckeye 8-string KR3...

The KR3 has since been shot with clear and now curing nicely.

Whilst I wait for that, started on the next batch of custom builds - lefty DC, 7-string DC3 and 8-string thru-neck DC - all using two of my favourite woods (Sapele and Wenge)...

aah the part that always messes with me. Are you going to try to align the laminations? Actually with compound scarf it's impossible I think, due to the two pieces being at different angles .. so accent laminations then?

Laminates aligned from the back. The front doesn't matter too much because the join is under the fretboard and the headstock has a veneer or paint on it :)

It's that time again, the blanket is out! Won't be too long now before this one is finished...

Although I did have to dedicate some time today to admiring this Ziricote drop-top that arrived from the US over the weekend. Love this stuff and this top is going on one of three new custom builds just started - 8-string multiscale DC (Wenge/Maple thru-neck, Sapele wings, Bocote fretboard, BKP and Hipshot hardware)... Watch this space for updates :)

Sure, the front is covered, but at the back it might prove tricky .. unless you're gluing them in some other way than what I'm thinking you'll get non-parallel lines in both pieces so

- if you align the bottom before carving the profile, they will go out of alignment when the neck is carved

- since one piece is at an angle, the widths of the laminates are different (though this is a 2nd order effect and possibly negligible)

nice wood porn BTW, that V with the buckeye top is stunning

Thanks, just strung that one up this afternoon so finished photos coming in the next day or so.

Fully got what you're saying about lining up the lams, etc and compound scarf, etc. The Buckeye V comes into this and I was able to glue up with the lams aligned on the rear, even after carving the neck profile. If you look real close, you can see there is a hair's thickness difference in the width of the Maple but it's all centered and doesn't notice otherwise :)

so how big was that buckeye burl before you cut it? Seriously- I dont think I have ever seen a piece of buckeye burl big enough to do a guitar like that.

edit- PS- nice score on that Ziricote top. DAYUMMMMMMMMMM

It was quite an irregular piece and it didn't cover the full size of the body. You can see how close I was by the yellow areas of the outside/waney edge of the billet. The tips of the "wings" are actually small off-cuts glued on separately :)

Finished: Custom 8-string KR3 - Buckeye Burl top on Swamp Ash body (wings), Wenge/Maple 3-piece thru-neck, Marblewood fretboard, ABM 3210s, Hipshot Grip-lock, BKP Painkiller (custom 16 degree baseplate) w/ aged cream coils...

between the waves in the grain of the fingerboard, the multi-scale frets and the apposing points of the head stock and body- this ax has a very "Salvador Dali" quality to it. I like it.

It does look all out of sorts. To be fair, looks better in person. One of the pitfalls of multiscale is that the fanned fret layout, etc can make the guitar look off centre (neck to body alignment). In this case, the grain in the Marblewood makes it look worse :)

Looking at multiscale necks always give me the illusion of them being twisted, particularly if viewed from one end or the other.

Oh yes, had a few moments of panic there. Only done a few multiscales so still getting to grip with that illusion :D

Build updates coming in the next day or two. In the meantime, I recently bought a Richlite fretboard blank out of curiosity. When it arrived, I thought it looked and felt like a bit of (black dyed) MDF. Having now thicknessed and slotted it, glued it (using epoxy) and added some 4mm MOP dot inlays, I'm getting use to it (the idea of using it). Left to do now is sanding in the radius and polishing prior to hammering in some frets. Looking forward to seeing the final look and trying it out on a finished guitar... And yes, this is a Fender-style neck (reverse headstock). Not my usual thing, just a one-off for a private build of my own... You won't miss this one when it's finished :)
