Crusader
Hi I have this recurring nightmare, its kind of binding. I think this is the 4th time I have replaced the Binding on this Les Paul. I have photo evidence of this, the last time - which is what I said 3 times already! The first time I cut the binding too short and didn't reach round to the neck Hope I can post all the photos which I will let speak for themselves The improved Overhead Router Setup And left a gap which of course is was the problem I had in the first place! Well I hope I've helped a few people with what not to do - or at least provided some light entertainment! The binding still isn't perfect, there's gaps everywhere. Its hard to get wide binding to go round curves but at least its full thickness all way round. The last attempt was thick and thin due to the spindle sander - a new machine which I haven't got used to yet. Need some finer grade sleeves ...or try my hand at a different hobby
ScottR
Finding new and creative ways to screw up is the easy part. Finding effective ways to repair and disguise the screw-up is the mark of a true artist. Well done.......several times. SR
Norris
When I did my binding I found it helpful to pre-bend it as much as possible using a hairdryer on it's hottest setting. I then started on the tightest curve, and paused to fine tune the bending as I got to each relatively straight section. I had a bolt on neck so didn't have any shrinkage issues - I could just trim to length when set. I used weld-on which gives you a little more working time than CA. However @Prostheta would recommend pure acetone no doubt Nice fix though. Similar to the "key" I used when binding the inside lip of my control cavity (you'll have to search through my Nozcaster thread if you want to see pictures of that)

You certainly have that right and thank you for your good words 20 hours ago, Norris said: When I did my binding I found it helpful to pre-bend it as much as possible... Yes I have tried that but the binding seems to shrink and/or stretch so all the pre-shaping is out the window, that's my experience at least. By the way I use a heat-gun on low. I used the higher setting a few times and it just melts and goes out of shape. Especially on that tight ear of a Les Paul. I nearly messed it up on this one too using low setting
Prostheta
It brought a smile to my face and a few winces, anyway! Yeah, I too have a slightly recalcitrant Les Paul which needs its ass kicking. First time that I've seen a wood save with Weld-On and dust. Normally any sort of dust and binder ends up looking horrific, however that is surprisingly neat. As Norris says, I tend to use pure acetone. I bend my binding with a mammalian proteinacious filament heat gun, wipe acetone into the channel, tape in the binding and then wick more acetone in to complete the bond, then wrap 'er up like a mummy. All this being said, I have not known Weld-On to shrink binding. I've known both acetone and Weld-On to expand binding until the solvent fraction offgasses, but never shrink it. Love the chisel work. They're clearly sharper than anybody that dumped their shares in Facebook before Monday.

I've looked elsewhere but haven't found anything more than 8mm wide
Prostheta
Anywhere I can get it, to be fair! Mostly it's celluloid and ABS which both work nicely with just acetone. Binding made from an ABS/PVC blend will not work and you need Weld-On or similar.

You know I was thinking when you mentioned that binding can expand with glue. So if it expands in width (assuming that's what you mean) then it would shrink in length, especially going round a bend
Prostheta
I'm really not sure to be honest. I've never considered it. I think this is mostly because I've never needed to rebind up to a blind stop like this fix. It's definitely one that's going around my head a bit anyway. pan_kara
nice, gonna be doing some of this soon (though on a bolt on mostly-flat top so much simpler)
