Singlecut: Domestic--not domesticated!

Recommended Posts

So I'm starting a new build right on the heels of Stripy.:) It's a commission and so it has a few rules. It will be a single cut based on a Les Paul outline. And it will be built from domestic--to the United States--wood. So it gets an ash body and a maple top. Neck woods are black walnut and Osage orange with a Bois-D'arc fretboard.

I like the way the ash planks fit together prior to glue up.

And whilst that was going on, some porn arrived by UPS.

I wiped on some mineral spirits to enhance the figure....but the change was not drastic. Apparently the figure stands up all by itself.:)

As I was dressing one edge prior to bookmatching, I noticed something I have not come across before. This edge was showing quilted figure. All three other side are curly figure. Everything I've had before was either curly from all sides or quilted from all sides.

Glued up and showing the non-bookmatched side.

And the bookmatched side. There appear to be glue lines because of tiny tear-outs of figure and slight variances in thickness from the kerf of the blade. Fear not, these will sand out.

Here's a little display of the neck woods and a top wood off cut. that wil not be part of this build...but it looks so sexy I had to include it in the shot!

Awesome!

How thick are the pieces for the body and the top?

The body was7/4 and the top 9/4 before splitting. So once everything is leveled flat and glued together it will likely be around 2.5" thick. And then I'll carve that all up into something much thinner.

interesting choice for the fingerboard.

Yes. It will start out bright yellow, then quickly mellow into that orangish shade in the picture and ultimately go a deep caramel golden brown. All phases should pick up colors in the IPA burst that it is getting. I'm working on putting together some before and after pics of a piece of that wood.

Didn't you once do a fingerboard of Osage orange yourself?

fret line markers only (on a fretless bass)- not the whole fretboard

IPA burst huh? hmmm.

by the way- I caught what you did here>>"Neck woods are black walnut and Osage orange with a Bois-D'arc fretboard"

nice marketing :thumb:

Very nice Scott, that maple is gorgeous with flame and quilt in the same piece.

I do envy the USA's choice of 'domestic' woods. I struggle here in the UK to source home-grown, interesting figured woods.

I have noticed that the close one lives to the equator, the fancier his domestic woods are. Those far north dwellers do have the edge on woods best suited for acoustics though.

I wonder what's gonna happen when you carve the top.

I suspect we're going to have a very nice tiger stripe and zero quilt. That edge it showed up in is now the two outermost edges, which will ultimately only be about a quarter inch thick. Time will tell.

I squared up the gluing surfaces of the walnut and Osage orange and ....glued them up!

C01228.jpg

Then I slice up another piece of Osage orange and cut a fretboard blank. Then I trued it up.

I've got to get me a thickness sander.

I did upgrade my fret slotting miter box to the new bearing guided version.

This is soooo much better than the old brass block version. I don't think I've ever cut slots as cleanly or as squarely before.

C01233.jpg

Next I'm squaring up the side of this massive block. There is probably enough volume of material for three necks...but only one will fit the the way I want to make it. I will find a good use for the off-cuts.

I have a before and after image of a skull I carved from Osage orange. the before image shows it fairly frsh and mostly yellow.

skull-right-quad.jpg

The after image shows it a darker caramel golden brown. But I found that the image is a .jpeg file and this place does not accept that type of file. Only .jpg.

Interesting.

I'll see what I can do to get a new shot saved in an acceptable format.

You can change the file extension manually, .jpeg and .jpg are the same. Nice skull btw.

That's something I've been meaning to mention. It's easy enough to rename the file extension on a computer, but not so easy on a mobile phone. It doesn't help that WhatsApp saves pictures with a .jpeg extension either. @Prostheta ?...
