2.5itim
So... I’ve been gone for pretty much all this year, with working 80 hours a week, buying a house, moving and trying to have quality time with my son I pretty much quit building for a while. I’m gonna slowly start building again, I no longer have a shop so right now will be working out of my garage and spare bedroom. I’m probably going to try and build a shop in my back yard at some point. Anyway, I’m going to be taking it slow this time around and try to focus on one guitar a time, I started this semi hollow n12 last year and am gonna go ahead and knock it out and then go from there. Heres some pics from where I left off last year last year.
2.5itim
Today I did my mountain inlay in the headstock with a piece of curly maple. Tomorrow I’ll put a few more hours into this neck and see if I can get it to the point of glueing it into the body. Most of my shop stuff is in boxes in the attic so 90% of my time right now is just trying to find shit.

2.5itim
thanks Guys, it’s good to see y’all here again too! I totally thought I was going to have more time, so things are slow lol. I finally got around to completely finishing the n12 offset, I had considered it finished but I had a few things left to do. I buy pre made nuts and then cut the bottom to get the height I need, I can’t remember the company that I got this one from but it was absolutely terrible, so I cut down a new graphtech black tusq, releveled the frets (first time using the katana and I have to say, that is an amazing tool!), crowned and polished the frets and got the setup dialed in. I have to say, out of all the guitars I’ve made this is hands down my favorite, the feel, the aesthetics, the tone, it all just speaks to me. So consider this one completely finished, for anyone that hasn’t seen my old posts I’ll post a few pics and specs. Arete n12 offset, alder body, 5 piece rock maple/padauk neck, padauk scarf joint laminate, Birdseye maple fretboard, 2 way adjustable truss rod, hipshot licking tuners, graphtech nut, nickel silver fretwire, hipshot chrome fixed bridge, dimarzio air norton/air zone pickups with the neck pickup coil split, twisted copper wiring, painted plum crazy. 2.5itim
And... I really hate those pics so I need to grab some better ones lol. Next up on the chopping block will actually be one of the m11 Black limba/padauk twins, I’ve got one of those really far along so won’t need to much work to get that one knocked out. 2.5itim
I found some extra time this weekend to do guitar stuff, I did a few things on the m11 Black limba padauk twin but nothing to really show. I’m waiting on my bridge and tuners to come in from hipshot for that one which they should be here today. I spent most of the weekend working on this aquaburst ta28, I started it right before I took my hiatus last year so figure I’ll knock it out real quick. I already had the body completely finished, dyed and tru oiled. The neck was scarf jointed and 12 degrees, neck and headstock shape cut, truss rod installed, fretboard made/radiused/blind slotted/glued on, neck was carved. So this weekend I installed my side dots and offset feet markers and also fretted it. Now just need to Finish sand the neck, do my mountain logo on the headstock, tru oil and fret level/crown/Dress and the neck will be finished. Specs so far are: ta28/6 model, solid ash body at 1.5” thick (a little thicker than my usual), honey roasted maple neck, honey roasted curly maple fretboard, nickel silver medium jumbo fret wire, aguaburst top dye, blue jean back dye, tru oil I’m sure it will get dimarzio pickups, hipshot bridge and tuners Here’s some pics of where I’m at with it at the moment
2.5itim
Pics don’t really do justice to the body colors, I’ll try to get some better ones at some point. I do have one question, on my last build I painted the headstock face and mountain logo then top coated it in polycrylic. Does anyone know how I should go about this one? I want to leave the headstock face natural and paint the mountain logo, I was thinking just do a couple of coats of polycrilic as a “primer”, paint the logo, top coat everything with polycrylic as normal. But would the polycrylic make an ok “base” under the paint or should I use something else? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
2.5itim
I was short on string blocks so I went ahead and made a couple up on the Bridgeport tonight. I’ll get them over to the powdercoater and they will be ready for these two guitars.
2.5itim
This one is finished for the most part, just need to make a cavity cover and get the hardware on the back of the body powdercoated. Specs are: padauk body, black limba top, Black limba back, wenge neck, curly maple fretboard, offset markers, 25.5” scale 24 fret, hipshot locking tuners, Black tusq nut, medium jumbo frets, hipshot fixed bridge, dimarzio titan pickups, tru oil finish. I’m terrible at taking pics which most of you know but here ya go.

It’s definitely one of my favorite woods visually. I’ve bought a bit more of it so I’ll be using it more often in upcoming builds.

Thanks man! I buy lumber and usually make them myself, but here recently I have been getting into blind slots which I can’t do myself so give them to a local luthier that goes by liggett guitars and he cnc’s them for me, it’s pretty nice to give him a blank and get back a blind slotted, radiused, profiled fretboard back so I’ll probably keep doing it this way.
2.5itim
I probably will update here a little bit on how my new “shop” build is going. I really really miss having a shop in my back yard since moving and my wife is really starting to hate our spare bedroom looking like a tree blew up in it (even tho the spare bedroom is my guitar room.) we still haven’t completely gotten sorted an organized yet so it’s a mess right now, I’ll be completely remodeling the garage to be my work shop, it’s a very small garage so space will be limited but gonna try and use the attic/mezzanine area as storage. First order of business was to build a wall beteween the garage and laundry part to try and keep sawdust out of the clean clothes. Half way there! Got the wall roughed in and door hung. Really ready to get this finished so I can build a proper work bench.
Andyjr1515
Lot of work but you won't regret it Looks a very usable space to me and you will find the extra flexibility of being able to layout stuff a great boon. Also I find there are times when clearing up the chips and dust as you are going pointless so it's useful to be able to finish that task and then do a full clear up without MrsAndyjr1515 tutting in between. Bearing in mind, looking at your first photo above, that my workshop space would be from your back wall to the end of the bench and widthwise to the upright beam next to the bike, it is nevertheless so,so much better than the previous spare room and outside workmate arrangement and has transformed my productivity. I think you will be very pleased with the result

2.5itim
Yeah Andy, it’s a lot more work than I remember lol. I haven’t done a remodel/wall building in years and I must have forgot lol. I’m trying to go as nice as possible on this so it’ll be slow as money is available. I had my buddy come by yesterday and we knocked out most of the electrical, ran the electrical outlets and hung one of the lights, after I get insulation up and walls finished we will hang the other 2 lights and power up the outlets. Thanks mistermikev!
2.5itim
I’ve done a pretty terrible job of documenting my builds in the past so I’m going to try to do better with this one. I really need to feel creative again so I’m gonna push my boundaries with this one, I had this idea pop into my head one day while I was a work so I drew it up and it actually looked pretty cool so I decided to go ahead and make it. The first pic you can see 2 shapes drawn on the bass side of the body, those will be cut out all the way through the body and the lower cut away will go almost all the way back to the bridge. I wanted to build a somewhat ergonomic body shape so this is what I came out with and the cut outs are pretty much just aesthetics. I will try to take my carving to another level on this body, I’ve got some ideas in my head but nothing for sure yet. And I’m going to try an asymmetrical neck profile Specs will be; black limba body (quite a bit thicker than my usual, this one is 1.625 thick), padauk neck, bocote fretboard, hipshot locking tuners, Black tusq nut, medium jumbo frets, either hipshot fixed bridge or tremolo (not sure there yet but I’m leaning to fixed to keep some girth in the body), neck/fretboard will be oiled, body I am going to be trying crystalacs water based clear. Ive heard good things about the clear so I’m gonna give it a go. Here’s the drawing I came up with for the template.
2.5itim
I picked out a board I wanted for the body at my local wood suppliers and he said he’d joint/glue up/thickness the body for pretty much nothing so I had him do it this time, save me a ton of work. I spent this morning cutting and making body templates. I ended up having to make 3 templates, I dont know how many times it’s gonna take me to learn ALWAYS check your bearing on your router bit is tight!!! 2.5itim
After a little time with my trusty jig saw the body shape is cut out, I really need to buy a damn band saw already. Then a few passes with the router and body is profiled.
2.5itim
I already had this neck blank made/scarf jointed/profiled/truss rod slot cut and I love padauk with Black limba so I decided to use it. Here’s a pick with the neck and fretboard blank.
