I’m glad you’re liking it Scott, not to toot my own horn here but I agree on the balanced artisticlly creative shape! I almost feel like I’m building my first guitar for the very first time again, there’s so much thought that is going into this one that I haven’t really put into my previous models. That’s the whole point of building this guitar is from an artistic point of view, I just needed to feel creative again!

As for the wood being grown just for this guitar, I agree! I had a really hard time cutting into the body today because it already looked great and was worried about losing that wood there. But... I had an idea in my head and I have to stick with it.

With that being said, today I cut the through holes on the bass side of the body.

last night I was trying to come up with ideas for an inlay and I had this idea of a faceless man, a faceless man to me represents someone or something that doesn’t have any of his own characteristics and conforms to the norm so I found that fitting since that’s everything I’m trying to avoid here, and if done like i think it should be would just look awesome.

So I’m definitely not a artist when It comes to drawing so don’t laugh at me but this is the idea I had for the faceless man.

And now the funny part... today I cut out the through holes on the bass side of the body, I look at it laying there and think “ok this is looking pretty cool!

I stand it up to take pictures, take the picture, go sit down and am looking at the pics and it’s a freaking face... A FACE!! The lower cut away is the mouth and the through holes are the eyes lol.

I had a pretty good piece of chip out on the through holes and spent a good 30 minutes trying to find the missing piece with no luck, i left this body thicker than my usual 1-1/2” so I’m gonna go ahead and thickness the back down to 1-1/2” which should take it all out.

Got some work done this weekend, got the neck pocket routed and the top carve done. I had originally planned to do something fun and elaborate for the carve but after getting everything together and seeing how the body had so much going on already I decided to keep it simple. I did a arm bevel and then chamfered it all the way up the bass side and then just chamfered the treble side and called that good.

Heres some pics of the neck fitted.

Had some time to work on the “shop” today too. Got the whole thing insulated, somewhat cleaned and sort of started organizing. Need to figure out what the hell im gonna do with the bike (really don’t want to put it in storage with the others because this one actually gets used). Hopefully can finish the walls next paycheck.

Thanks I’m glad y’all are liking it!

so I’m waiting for my fretboards to come back from my CnC guy so work is at a halt right now on that one. In my time of needing something to do I remembered I had a guitar in the closet that I was building, I hated the way the finish turned out on it so I shelved it. I also have a stack of bodies I made up last year so... steal a neck from one guitar to make another, sounds like a logical plan to me.

This is a s22 model that I made at the end of last year, it’s sapele, finished in a really really really dark blue almost black dye with tru oil over top, the finish is really cool it’s black with a hint of blue if you catch it in the right light. The neck is rock maple with a honey roasted fretboard and medium jumbo fretwire.

Getting down to business I drilled the neck mounting holes in the body, and finish sanded the neck from 80 to 600 grit. Then started finishing the headstock. I’m doing something a bit different on this headstock from my usual. I did something similar on the purple n12 offset so figured I’d try it here. I did a coat of polycrylic on the headstock, laid down a stencil of my mountain logo and painted it on in black. I’ll let this “cure” for a couple days and then put a few more coats of polycrylic over the top. The neck will be tru oiled.

And just a few pics with some mineral  spirits thrown on to get an idea of what it’ll look like finished.

Tim, I'm going to make a suggestion here that I hope you won't take offense at. I think you've really got something going with this body shape. It's very creative and innovative and just flat works. It features sweeping curves and briskly changing directions at sharp corners. My suggestion is to tweak your headstock a bit to reflect what the body is doing. Your head stock is more soft organic curves with no corners at all. I think if you alter your curves to more sweeping lines like the body has and change some of your round corners to sharp corners you can make the whole guitar look very integrated as a whole.

This weekend has mainly been spent on the ta28 aquaburst and the black s22 necks. Got both of the headstocks finished, this is really the first time I’ve done headstocks this way and I really liked it but I will probably spray the polycrylic from here on out, brushing leaves lots of bubbles which is a pain, I just didn’t feel like setting up my spray equipment and cleaning guns! This will probably be my process from now on.

Brush on one coat of polycrylic, let dry 30 minutes, put on my mountain stencil and spray 3 really light coats of paint from aerosol, let’s sit for 30 minutes, brush on 4 more coats of polycrylic and let sit one hour between each coat. I also level sanded between each coat with 600 grit. Last coat I didn’t sand.

I don’t know what it is about the paint and polycrylic but it’s almost like the paint seeps into the polycrylic, there is no raised spots whatsoever at the paint like I thought there would be.

Finished up a bunch of little stuff on the ta28, drilled wiring holes to each cavity, routed neck pickup cavity to depth, painted neck mounting screws and string block and painted all of the cavities. This one is ready for fret leveling/crowning/dressing and assembly.

  • 2 weeks later...

Somewhat busy weekend, yesterday was spent mostly on the ta28 aquaburst although I don’t really have anything to show pics wise. Frets leveled using my katana (I freaking love this thing!), frets crowned, polished, dressed. Nut cut to height, and got everything assembled. I’m still waiting on my pickups to come in (should be here tomorrow) and then I can get this guy finished.

I was contacted last week by a customer who wants a ta28 but he wants the leg cut out from the new model I’ve been working on. I really couldn’t imagine it in my head but I told him I’d give it a try. We are still working out specs but as of right now it’s sapele body, roasted maple neck, honey roasted Birdseye fretboard, hipshot tuners, hipshot fixed bridge, neck pickup only no bridge pickup, and he wants the body finished in Pelham blue.

So I swung by my local wood supplier and he happened to have some sapele 15” wide so I get to do it in a 1 piece body. So today I got most of the body knocked out.
