Blonde Glamour Shots...Something old, something new, something blonde, something blue!

Recommended Posts

"like all the bowling alleys had been destroyed... sos I spent most my time looking for beer".  and that would explain why all I have to show for the last two weeks is the following...

here's how I did my neck pocket for the bolt on w 7" radius at heel: 1 rough cut around neck pocket leaving approx 1/8" gap, cover neck template with masking tape...

DSCN1990.thumb.JPG.1a0a66c91be4cce0aef6044d8e71a687.JPG

2 clamp everything down and ensure it is on center...DSCN1991.thumb.JPG.84484734fa9f32e2e15594e46ba9a0cc.JPG

3 fill 1/8" gap with epoxy...DSCN1992.thumb.JPG.86c86af343d6815c2033a5da4be80926.JPG

4 break the pieces apart - later I will use this as a guide to make a 3/4" template. DSCN1993.thumb.JPG.e62d7c432eed44a175216e5cd1fe1418.JPG

same process for my trem rout cover...

DSCN2004.thumb.JPG.408a92aba4b95e1a5a4ac29b0465c646.JPG

made some truss rod templates:DSCN2009.thumb.JPG.58c2bbe4a8704eb1669c1be603220a83.JPG

finished neck pockets:

DSCN2010.thumb.JPG.49524b255f36d4ccec52b61510622b2c.JPG

kept checking my birdseye and it was stable over the last two weeks (since I rough cut it) so I planed it down and it's ready for final shape cut.

DSCN2006.thumb.JPG.a531a941fcf3afc4bfdb361c82d713c9.JPGDSCN2008.thumb.JPG.87978867252105d1424fd6e0c9d2206c.JPG

made a template for my gretsch inlays... will lay this at an angle on the fretboard to keep the inlay flat on the radius and then dremel out the areas...DSCN2007.thumb.JPG.35a735785424ecaa714873dfa31ca505.JPG

today I plan to plane down my set neck version, and perhaps do the final finish trim on my bolt version...

my whiteside bit was like "what b17c#, what!?"

got my set neck stock planed down and sanded...

DSCN2016.thumb.JPG.1b8e42669b1bbfa0b1e1d7ae8cc228af.JPG

installed my truss rod in the bolt version.  used a bull nose 1/4 in combo with a normal 1/4 bit so that the bottom of the channel is mostly radiused except for the parts where the truss requires a flat bottom.  sharpened my chisel and cut some corners... voilla, fits like a glove.DSCN2014.thumb.JPG.6deffacdb0090b77ba5093dbc80ce843.JPGDSCN2015.thumb.JPG.b5ab050af1664b0b91bf372948d869d6.JPG

========== update 2/23/19 ==========

using my jig to cut the truss access holes in the fretboard... shims to prop it up to square...

DSCN2024.thumb.JPG.2785f361f53dd815f15d5a99b0685732.JPG

and here is my truss access closeup

DSCN2026.thumb.JPG.6935ad5058703d3adc26c47f752d1f96.JPG

had a tiny little blowout on the very edge of the bottom wing on the headstock... only about 1/8" but I couldn't find the piece so I routered out about 3/16 x 3/16 x 1/2 and glued on a small piece... area will be covered by headstock overlay and binding anyway.  the dark spot is a shallow burn mark where I stopped w my router also will be covered.

DSCN2034.thumb.JPG.6124cf14586965e9b0771e499a4feb83.JPG

and all better!

DSCN2036.thumb.JPG.c3f3cae72daf02d3c6b907f8de1211a2.JPG

used a couple of finish nails to line up and hold the bolt version fretboard on...

DSCN2032.thumb.JPG.a8fc8e40896f7643383aea40da3aadd1.JPG

and glued up the fretboard for the bolt version...

DSCN2033.thumb.JPG.33dd3efdbc539525614378bea3cac0c4.JPG

forstnered (is that a verb?) out my neck pocket for my set version...

DSCN2038.thumb.JPG.d6ca02f4131c998ad90efd6ccd579a14.JPG

and routered out the pocket... she's sitting 1/4 (top) + 1/8 (typical fender overhang) above so will have to barely touch things with the radius when I get there...

DSCN2039.thumb.JPG.974eb797b4582e9d5b484d9c687ed258.JPG

DSCN2040.thumb.JPG.2adcd9e7a9d028ac276c2ab8a2a681bc.JPG

made a funny video...

neck joint test

DSCN2043.thumb.JPG.aa4bce4fc1b50d24d3781111ef8af55a.JPG

routed my inlays using the jig above... but this time at an angle to minimize sanding.  got my inlays all ready to be cut, will take them out, glue up the neck, trim it, then reinstall them.

DSCN2044.thumb.JPG.af56565e2263e96a0bd87e2d74270cbe.JPG

also redid my wiring diagram for the strat style... think I might use a piece of vero board to make wiring in the pickups (and potential replace) easier.

routed my wire channels, got my bolt neck pocket done...DSCN2049.thumb.JPG.ac9b56b035987656406cc0b3b2817850.JPG

calling @Norris come in @Norris ... may I ask a question?  A while back you did a beautiful tele... gotm I believe.  On it there was a unique transition for a strat/tele style just beyond the nut towards the headstock.  I liked that quite a bit and am doing my own sort of 'waterfall' version of it but was wondering: how long before strings are making contact?  Did you find you had to adjust after the fact?

Of course the thickness of the headstock offsetting the tuning machine poles would have an impact... and I'll have to somehow take that into consideration but looking for a thumb in the air here.  mine extends 5/8" from the backside of the nut but tapers off steep so perhaps taper starts at 7/16.  I think I may have to grind it down a bit but I like it the way it is.

I don't have my tuners on yet and am planing on running veneer over the top of it... so I can't adjust it later.  Any/all help appreciated and if anyone else has done something similar I'd love any input.

It's taken me ages to find the page :)

Page 8 and 9 is where I was fettling it

http://www.projectguitar.com/forums/topic/48292-first-build-the-nozcaster/?page=8

Down to a slight miscalculation for the relative positioning of the nut and the curve down to the headstock, plus the fact the truss rod was in place by that point, I had to remove a fair bit of material from the fretboard after the nut. I basically kept going until the string had a clear run from the nut to the base of the first tuner.

Hope that helps :)

thank you very much sir.  I went looking for that thread last night and found some finished shots but this is much better.  you da man.  looks like your neck stock may have been thicker.  I started out with 15/16 and now have exactly 3/4 under the fb.  Looks like I still need to take it down a bit.  thanks again for digging that out!

one thing of note: next time put down some wax paper and I won't end up with a scrap piece glued to my headstock!

anywho... sanded down my inlays and cropped my veneer.

had hoped to start doing my radius this weekend but remember I still had to glue on some pieces to keep the base from rocking so... that will dry by tomorrow so hopefully!

I’m not sure how their black is, but check out Vintage Forge guitar parts on amazon. I’ve been very impressed with their hardware finishes so far.

thanks for the heads up, I saw their stuff on evilbay and was considering it and will keep them in mind for next time I need something.  the first two I bought were $5-7 and both had minor blemishes... the gotoh I ordered ($10) was perfect... probably on me... you get what you pay for!

Bending that veneer around the headstock is awesome, this has got me thinking that I need to attempt an all rosewood guitar like the ziricote build, until I saw the price of Indian rosewood body and neck blanks 😱

and..... the moment I've all been waiting for: radius... a lot more physical work than I had anticipated as going from cavity to wood you really have to be careful it doesn't grab... but other than that it went pretty smooth.

Sweet work, Mike. The radius looks killer.

thank you sir.  I believe I owe thanks to you and @Andyjr1515 (and perhaps some others) for your input when I was in early stages of figuring out how I'd do it.

And Mr. Natural, for sharing his jig if I remember correctly.

This is awesome, in fact a lot cooler than my imagination led me to believe when you first posted about it, looking forward to seeing it with the top. Is this for the rosewood one or the other?
