gpcustomguitars
For no apparent reason at all, I've started a new project - a simple SG. I had a 35mm thicknessed board in the shop, a printed out plan and some thin MDF, so it was all ready to go. First, glued the plan onto the mdf and made the template for routing. Body blank was missing some width, but I've glued some stock from the same board to make it up. Routed out the shape and the pup cavities in one go: then, planed, filed and sanded the neck angle in filed the bevels then sanded upper horn revealed a crack when shaped, which I've stabilized with CA routed the tenon and then drilled the pot/toggle holes, drilled to a bit less that depth form the back, and routed out the cavity I've started the neck, scarfing 25mm stock, routing for a Stew-Mac HotRod which I have and almost ready to glue on a Stew-Mac rosewood fretboard, pre-slotted and radiused. Also, cut and fitted the tenon, confirming the correct angle and fit. What I do have to do next is to find a cherry offcut to thickness to a 1mm headstock veneer, glue the fretboard on and fret/shape the neck. No photos, but I will post some later. komodo
yeeesssss No better reason to start a build than no reason at all. What finish are you aiming at?

I've started most of mine for that very reason! SR
Andyjr1515
Excellent - looking forward to seeing this develop. You've made a good start!
gpcustomguitars
I'm planing to make it the classic red, and to lacquer it by brushing, seems to work fine so far. I hope to have some shop time later today, so I can make a few pics of the neck so far. Waiting for the parts is frustrating.......
gpcustomguitars
and here's the neck so far... My router just stopped working last night while I was thicknessing the headstock veneer, so I'll have to make a stop at the repair shop.
gpcustomguitars
The router just had some wiring/switch problems, so it's back from the repair. I've managed to thickness the headstock plate to 1.5mm, I'll sand off the .5mm later. proceeded with gluing it to the headstock, and trimmed and sanded flush. More pics of that later, I'm getting ready to glue on the fretboard, hopefully later today.
gpcustomguitars
Here's where I'm at now - glued the fretboard last night, should saw off the taper of the neck next, and fine fit the tenon.
Andyjr1515
Coming along nicely!
gpcustomguitars
Thanks!!! I started thicknessing the slope on the back of the neck when my router stopped working again... Decided to just go ahead and use chisel, saw and file. Also, managed to plane the taper of the neck on one side. Hope to manage the other side tomorrow, so I can start shaping it.
gpcustomguitars
2 shop sessions later, I have shaped and glued the neck in. Tenon needed some adjustment, but so far so good. Perhaps it would have been easier to install the side dots and fret it before gluing it in, but It shouldn't make that much difference...
gpcustomguitars
Yesterday I spent some time sanding the joint, and drilled glued and leveled the side dots and the fb markers. Couldn't find any mop dots, I was sure I still had some in stock, so I used a 6mm leather punch to cut some from a strip of white binding. Looks nice to me. So, fretting is next. And the end product always looks great! Ain't it funny what camera lenses do to perspective? SR
gpcustomguitars
I can't take credit for that - I've seen it done in a shop I was frequenting a long time ago - they did all their non-MOP dots that way. Even the punches were shop made. They actually were regularly making some of their tooling in-house, some of that must have seeped over to me. Yes, lenses do funny things - I think I actually saw a guitar that was made like that, giant headstock shape for body and a small body shape for a headstock
Bizman62
Way back in czar time Russia they built a railroad. An inspector came to check the build and noticed that the rails seemed to close each other in the distance. The explanation was that it's because of perspective. "No perspectives are allowed here, fix it!"
gpcustomguitars
Also an update on the SG - frets are in, still not leveled, first coat of nitro dye done. Still one coat of wine red to go, and then the lacquering.

gpcustomguitars
Thanks! It spent the summer on the sofa in my office Not enough time, even with this work-from-home mode. I've promised myself a lot of times I'll not start anything new until I've finish all the current projects, but then something fires up my imagination and ... 1
