My sweep picking

I've been doing some 3 string sweeps and am going to move on to some more complex (4,5,6 string) sweeps and was wondering if my technique was ok as I don't want to try and tackle these with improper technique.

Any comments, suggestions, critisism, teasing.....name calling, is welcome! :D

that pull of always messes me up, cause it's aa up stroke for me so then i have to pull up and paus while the root note i'm pulling off to rings and then hit the b and then turn right back around and do down on g b e

before you move on, i'd recomen learning the major pattern of the A from too... and maybe look at the C form in 3 string.... major and minor.. then move onto 4 and 5 string... but thats just me

It might just be the nature of the pinky reach you're going for, but it seems that it would be more economical to keep your index, middle, and ring fingers touching the strings they've fretted. As you move to the next string, you can lift the finger, but by keeping it lightly touching the string it was just on, you're not only staying in position for the upstroke, but also putting a more solid mute onto it.

That said, you didn't seem to have problems with strings ringing out, so the muting isn't too much of an issue so far.

Sounds pretty good! Once you get some patterns down, try moving through a few in sequence (provided they're in the same key) rather than repeating one. You'll get less of a 'widdly widdly widdly' vibe. Also, instead of an extended flurry of notes, they can be used to accent passages rather than BE the passages.

Pretty good, though!!! Especially if you're right new at it!!

I pick one note on the up stroke so the order is VVV^V

Oh, I see. Try it as VVV^P^^

I don't understand...

I was playing....

   v   v   v          ^  v

|---------12h17p12---------------------|

|-----13-------------13----------------|

|-14--------------------14-------------|

|--------------------------------------|

|--------------------------------------|

|--------------------------------------|

How would I play vvv^P^^?

Thanks for the responses guys :D

Something like this:

   v   v   v  ^       ^  ^

|---------12-17p12---------------------|

|-----13-------------13----------------|

|-14--------------------14-------------|

|--------------------------------------|

|--------------------------------------|

|--------------------------------------|

That's how I'd play it as a sweep... but don't let my style cloud your way. You should make your own decision B). What you posted above is not sweeping on the up stroke... in fact you alternate on the last notes.

looks good to me too

next you could try:

v    ^ ^ v v             ^ ^ v v

19p15------15-19-15-17-14------14-17-14-15-12-------12-15-12-14-11-----

-----17--17--------------15--15---------------13--13--------------12---

-------16------------------14-------------------12------------------11-

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

or

 v v v      ^ v v v       ^ ^ v v     ^ ^v v       ^ ^

-------------------------------------------------------

------------------10-15-10-----------------------------

-----9-14-9-----11--------11----9-14-9-----------------

---11------11-12--------------11------11----9-14-9-----

-12-------------------------12------------11------11---

----------------------------------------12----------12-

it's easyer to play each one twice and if you want some realy hard stuff then try this:

 ^ vvvvvv      ^^^^^   v ^   v v vvv          ^ ^ ^ ^ ^

|-------3h7/10p7--------|----------8h12/15p12-------------|

|------3--------8-------|---------8----------13-----------|

|-----4----------7------|--------9-------------12---------|

|----5------------9-----|------10----------------14-------|

|---5--------------10p5-|----10--------------------15p10--|

|3h7-------------------7|8h12---------------------------12|

|-------------10h14/17p14--------------|-------------15h19/22p19----------------|

|-----------10-----------15------------|-----------15-----------20--------------|

|---------11----------------14---------|---------16---------------19------------|

|-------12--------------------16-------|-------17-------------------21----------|

|-----12------------------------17p12--|-----17-----------------------22p17-----|

|10h14-------------------------------14|15h19------------------------------19\p3|

btw, if you want to learn to sweep, play a lot of Children of Bodom stuff... alexi likes sweeping.....

Um, you guys know that canuckguitarist just started sweep picking a couple of weeks ago, right? You should at least notate up/down strokes for those tabs you posted as it's not intuitive for those that's just starting out (the purpose of this thread.)
