This contest is open to amateur members that build their own guitars either using parts from others or completely from scratch and will be continued each month for a place showing your creation on the homepage! The winner of course will have his/her guitar featured on the homepage of Project Guitar.com and if you have a website the picture will link directly to it if you so choose. If your a forum member you will also be upgraded to a Featured member which allows you to see the Advanced Chat section and download area. So show us your creation in this thread! You've got till midnight EST the 23rd of May then this thread gets locked and the voting starts! SPECS Body built from Basswood by myself using the old RG 550 Body it was based on. Low Trs Trem ( Edge snapped on the knife edge ). Bridge pickup from a Charvel I used to have and the neck and middle from an old yamaha. All Chrome hardware with a satin wallnut finish. So there you go! Total cost less than $150 AU Cheers!!! Active Vol, Phase reverse switch. Rhythm simulator switch - Cap and res switched in. 3 band eq - bass mid boost and treble. Carved top on body.... pretty!!! Enjoy!! One piece Paduak body, maple top. 2 x Gotoh P90's wrapover bridge. Maple neck, rosewood board and some big o'l sound chambers. I started guitar making in February with no woodworking experience and this is result of my second build, I'm pretty pleased. I had been really interested in guitar technology and design, and it seemed like something i wanted to have a crack at after drawing guitars for a few years. I had heard of a course run by the luthiers at The Twelfth Fret, a guitarists' pro shop here in Toronto, staffed by some of the most amazing luthiers anywhere. Sure enough, the course existed (which they don't offer any more, unfortunately), so i signed up. My design goal was to combine influences and features i liked in many other guitars that were around at the time. Some of the objectives were met, others were not, due to lack of time, resources and experience. Here's the result: More images here. Specs: - Lightly figured black walnut body - Bolt-on quartersawn maple neck - Rosewood fretboard with offset clay dots for fret markers - 24 Dunlop 6105 frets - Scarf-jointed reverse headstock - Schaller Floyd Rose and Schaller tuners - Jackson J-95 bridge pickup - Seymour Duncan JB middle pickup - Three-way toggle - Series/split/parallel mini-switches for each pickup - Roger Gresco treble boost preamp - Tung oil finish over the entire body and neck (black painted headstock, with decal under the clearcoat) I just realized that i've had this guitar half my life, and building it still ranks as one of the most fulfilling things i've done. loosetoe Posted May 21, 2004 Report Share Posted May 21, 2004 I guess I "might as well" enter. ( - for jehle) I built the following bass over the course of the last 3 months. I have built a few necks and a few bodies in the past, but this is actually my first atempt at going the whole 9 yards in one fell swoop. I always wanted a fretless bass, but I cannot even come near to affording a Carl Thompson or a Benavente. So, I gave it my best shot. I could not be happier with the results. The bass is a 38" scale single cut/jazz bass. Project pics of its construction can be found at http://projectguitar.ibforums.com/index.php?showtopic=6728 The body is one pice of Spalted Curly Maple. The headstock facing and truss rod cover were also taken from this spalted blank. The neck is 5 pieces of Mahogany/Maple The headstock has wings of Padauk on each side. The fingerboard is made of Tulipwood with Hard Maple binding and Hard Maple inlay for the fret markers. The control knobs are also tulipwood. The side dots are Walnut. The nut is Hard Maple. The jack seen in the pictures will be replaced with a tuplipwood "nut" on the face of the instrument once I can get into the shop again (a few weeks). The instrument is finished with Waterlox high-gloss Original varnish. This is a tung oil /spar varnish mix that is commercially available. 6 coats of this were applied, sanding between each coat. The finish was then buffed back with 000 and 0000 steel wool. This removed the high gloss finish and gave a nice natural shine. 2 coats of paste wax were then applied after a few days rest. This is a wonderful finish to touch. The tuners are Sperzel locking tuners in black/gold. The bridge is a Kahler adjustable unit also in black/gold. It is completely adjustable in all 3 dimensions (L/R, Up/Down, Forward/Back) Since Kahler does not mix/match colors, I ordered a gold tail and had the baseplate powder coated black by a local shop. The strap buttons are the recessed (flush mount) dunlop strap lok variety in gold. The pickup is a custom wound Ken Armstrong. The weight is 8 lbs 3 oz. Very light for an instrument this size.
