  1. And rightfully so! Here is one of the newest projects...
  2. It normally takes me about an hour to finish sand from 150 to 320 or 400. But my guitars have a ton of bevels on both sides, a cutaway, and short flat sides that have to all be individually sanded. It still takes me a pretty long time even for strats though.
  3. Yes, i know it is a poly acrylic blend... that is what i was talking about. Acrylic anything always has a blue tint. Polyacryilic, acrylic lacquer. Normally polyurethanes are some of the hardest finishes. Maybe you found one brand that is actually decent.
  4. Never heard of general finishes. But pretty much ALL water based poly finishes have a blue tint. They generally dont dry very hard at all. And dont spray as well. AT least the ones i have experimented with.
  5. I just use a piece of 2000 grit sandpaper rolled up or in a square. Then i put some liquid buffing compound on a cloth and buff it really fast. No mess, and it comes out just as nice as other methods.
  6. Thank you sir. Matching the cavity cover was always something i HAD to do. And it bothers me it doesnt match on this one. Normally i try to match them exactly. But i didnt have a single scrap left over from the same mahogany. I feel like i am underselling by a ton as well. Even though i have a good internet reputation, it is still hard to sell guitars that are not custom orders. People always seem to love them, but always takes quite a while for them to sell. The KL replicas i used to make sold a lot easier. Another reason i am going to make a few Horizon style guitars next. People still want basic guitars instead. Is 66 a lot, comparatively?
  7. It has a truss rod that is narrower than a stew mac 2 way? That is pretty uncommon. Usually those older guitars and acoustics had those huge square truss rods. If you can make it fit, then sure, why not.
  8. Heck yeah they are... like 800-1000 for just the kit. I am just dreaming! Closing pictures of the zebra.
  9. Bob, i wasnt talking about the 2k bing 55 bucks a gallon. I was talking about the conversion varnish. It is some of the best stuff. As Wes stated, he has had great luck with it. Once i figured it out, it worked great. Dried very fast, but even with that fast drying finish, i still had shrinkback. Wes, I honestly dont really think it is a good option for me either. More of the idea of it that i like. I wish there were other ways to get a rock hard clear finish like polyester, other than epoxy. Which i might actually consider here soon.
  10. Right now, my finish of choice is catalyzed urethane, but yes its foul stuff. I spray outside in a makeshift tent, and its pretty evil still. I've never had an issue with sealers, but I only use shellac, so that may be why perhaps. Pricey indeed, with the catalyst, my stuff costs almost 100$ for a quart. That said on a guitar, a quart goes a LONG way haha. Worth the money imo. Never seen any that pricey. Even the catalyzed conversion varnish i used to do was like 55 bucks a gallon with a 20$ catalyst you had to buy on top of it. A quart a long way on a guitar? Have you ever sprayed a full guitar, body and neck? At 3-4 medium coats, you could MAYBE get 2 guitars out of it.
  11. Thanks for the replies. Doug, i found that site, but how do you order it? There is no option for that and no dealers listed. Bob, I have used 2k finishes, and some just dont cure on wood or on wood sealer. Plus they are quite expensive, usually around 55 bucks a quart. I kinda figured they would be intensely dangerous.
  12. We all know about the insanely hard polyester finishes that big companies use as clear coat and sealer. I have never been able to find any for sale. Where the heck do they get that stuff? It is rock hard. That is exactly what i want in a finish. Out of every finish i have ever used, non get very hard. Even auto finishes. I really want to find some of the polyester stuff they use on factory guitars.
  13. Thanks guys! I really feel like am improving on every build. Even after 8 years i still learn new things and better methods. Pros, If you really want it for a bass, Go for it. It would be the only bass in that shape ever. haha, Mike! I normally wear even more camo than that. I thought about camo wrapping my truck too. But too expensive.
  14. Feels good to get 2 done around the same time.
  15. The grain filler isnt your problem at all. You can still use that. If you sand through anywhere on any type of finish, it is always going to be lighter colored, and will never match again unless you strip it. I have had that happen many times. Only way around that is to apply more finish in the areas that be prone to sand throughs.
  16. Haha, i actually expected you to mention that. it will be a NON traditional strat...
  17. I cant vote for anything but that burled Les paul. That is the best looking les paul i have ever seen. Woulda been PERFECT if it had black hardware.
  18. So, FINALLY it seems like i am getting somewhere. Got the customer Rhoads guitar pretty much done, and am just finish sanding the zebrawood EXP. I have worked on these guitars for hours ever single day for months. Normally i can knock out a guitar in a week and a half if just do one at a time. But for some reason, i decided to make like 4 at once, all different stages. So it took forever. But i am finally finishing up this round of guitars. Feels pretty good. I am going to start a more traditional guitar soon. As soon as i get a template for it.
  19. Here is the rhoads sprayed. I am very happy with the way it came out. Its been a while since i made a v. I think this is my most successful on. It is on its way to New York, to a guy who has a Super strat and a flamed maple explorer of mine.
  20. Just got the neck glued in tonight. I am really liking the color combos on this one.
  21. Where you are getting that tearout in the wood, turn the wood around and run it through in the opposite direction. That normally helps. Wood grain is very directional.
