  1. I'll call this one the "Mtawarira" (aka the beast). Jayda S6f: - It's a 6 string fretless semi-hollow bass - Panga-panga neck with maple stringers - Zebrano front and back with maple core - Partial fretlines - Aguilar preamp - Hipshot hardware My first effort at winding my own pickups: I made 2 stacked humbuckers for this project (just used an electric drill, possibly the hardest thing I've ever done ) Piezo pickups mounted in the body with a homemade buffer circuit. Still waiting on some magnets to hold the cover on at the back, so for now tape will have to do. Trying to make the cover as invisible as possible. More pics: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=5083...mp;l=6e4b9415ac If I find time (and somehow learn how to play a 6 string fretless) I'll upload some sound clips
  2. This is my second build, although my first proper guitar build. My first being an ashbory bass (google g1_ashbory). She goes by the name of the Jayda LS-4 (until I can think of a better name) Maple-Purpleheart-Maple neck Ash body wings with walnut on top and bubinga at the back Rosewood fb with maple binding and Gold MOP Jayda logo on 12th fret Custom african blackwood and maple bridge * EMG 35P4 pup Schaller semi-covered pegs Gold fretwire African blackwood knobs (not in the pics) Satin finish * The bridge in the pic needs to be replaced/remade. An unfortunate incident meant that it got damaged but I'm unsure when I'll have time to fix it. More pics Build thread
  3. Almost there: Just need to: - level / crown frets - sand and finish - wire it up
  4. The upper horn is quite close to the neck...but the horn doesn't get in the way all that much, especially seeing as my thumb stays mainly at the back of the neck. It was a bit of a pain to sand there. I'm going for the p-bass sound: EMG 35P4 Update: - inlayed - fretted - pup installed Just need to do a few last jobs, fix up some mistakes and then I'm on to sanding and finishing...
  5. Tuners fitted (unfortunately there was a mishap with the D-tuner, I guess I'll have to use some filler / glue and saw dust) General progress shot:
  6. Havn't gotten much done recently because I had to work on my thesis A little work done on the headstock:
  7. Looking really sweet... Keen to see how this one turns out! :-) Keep the pics comming!! Edit: I guess if I read past page 1 I would see how it turned out Nice work!
  8. Update: -fretboard glued - neck carved Good fun carving the neck
  9. Thanks for the encouragement! :-) It was originally inspired by Carl Thompson's work, but evolved a little through the design phase Edit: here are a few more pics if your interested: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=1103...mp;id=528485680
  10. And the fretboard which over the past couple of days has been bound with maple, tapered, radiused, and fret slots cut. And that's it to date. More progress to come over the following weeks... :-)
  11. The body after some body contouring.
  12. This is a custom bridge I'm working on. Not in these pics the brass saddles that have since been embedded in the purpleheart that the strings will actually sit on
  13. Mock up of the bass including a first attempt at a custom bridge, that one has since been replaced with a better attempt
  14. Hello, I'm new to the forum. This is my second build (well sort of). My first build has an ashbory bass: http://people.cs.uct.ac.za/~jdavies/ashbory/ but this is my first proper guitar build. 34" scale 24 fret 4 string neck-through maple-purpleheart-maple neck ash body capped with walnut and backed with bubinga
