  1. Hmm, guys, new issue has risen. The guy called me today and I went back to collect the guitar. He played both pickups, which both worked, and also demonstrated that when he removed the battery the pickup would not sound. However, there is something strange. The volume taper appears to be totally unaffected, acting as normal. But the pickup has the EMG logo on it and everything. I'm not sure if something weird is going on. The pickup certainly sounds pretty good though, boosting my distortion significantly.
  2. Okay, finally got a reply from EMG. Reproduced here exactly. First, my email: If I use an EMG-81 wired to a 250K pot but maintain the knob at max level all the time, how much effect will this have on the sound? Thanks. His reply: None at all. The only thing that will be affected is the taper. Best Regards, Rick Hunt Engineering Technician EMG Pickups, Inc. www.emgpickups.com Guess that's pretty conclusive then. Works perfectly.
  3. *That* is what the guitar tech told me, not what *I* said. I was wondering if the EMGs would work with a 250k or 500k pot in the first place. I have little doubt that what he told me was wrong, for the very points you stated yourself. But the problem would be so much easier if I'd bought them first hand, but I got them second hand so I don't have access to the pots. Thus the question if they'd work, and if they do, how well. The many different answers I've got shows its not quite as straightforward as it seems to be. There is a little hope, though. I found out from a friend that the guy I was talking to isn't the actual technician, but sort of a salesman guy. The guy doing the actual installation is someone else. Hopefully, I won't die of an electric shock. Btw, what do you mean by an amp running off "dirty" power?
  4. No ****, Sherlock. Thanks for answering the main question of the thread, "Do EMGs work best with the parts supplied by EMG themselves?". Oh hold up, no one asked that. But thanks for your valuable input anyway. Why don't you try answering the actual question? Admin Edit: Watch the Language & try checking your attitude
  5. I actually sent them an email to ask them what the effect on the tone would be, since all they said was that it would "act like a switch", but I got no reply from them. It's been... 4 days since I sent the email?
  6. Haha, yes that would certainly have been what I'd done if I had the box XD. I got these pups second hand.
  7. Wow, I've had a lot of differing opinions on this one. Some say that the EMGs will work, but lose some tone, some say it will lose a lot of tone, yet another group on another forum I go to says it works perfectly fine, and AprilEthereal says it might not work at all! I'm so confused right now
  8. Well, he said I could. And it really gets more fishy. He says the stereo jack is needed for the pre-amp signal to reach the jack, and not as an on/off switch. I'm going to take my guitar back and send it to another tech, I only realised all this when I got home.
  9. A few days ago, I asked if a 25K pot is absolutely necessary for an active pickup, and it was a resounding yes from you guys. However, I just called my local guitar tech and he said, "Oh, we'll just hook it up to the original pots on the guitar. The ones that come with the set, you just keep for spare." Is he trying to fool me or is it possible?
  10. So by doing this I will basically be able to use both pickups seperately? The guitar only has 2 knobs, however, so would they both be dedicated volume knobs?
  11. Hmm, okay, thanks Greg. Perhaps I could rewire so that the EMG and passive pickup each have a dedicated volume knob, but no tone knob? I would lose some flexibility but I don't tweak with the tone knob all that much anyway. Passive + Active circuitry sure is complex
  12. Hi guys, new here. Recently I got a bargain on an LTD Viper-50, which I am now upgrading with a single EMG 81 pup in the bridge. My question is, is it possible? Also, I'm getting the pickup second hand and the dude selling it to me doesn't have the pots or the audio jack. Would that be a problem? I'm in Malaysia, so I'm not sure how available those things are around here. From what I gather, though, pulling out the battery everytime i'm done playing, while tedious, will have the same effect as the stereo jack. And leaving the tone and volume knobs at 10 will also keep the pickup steady. Any help would be much appreciated.
