  1. Thanks Buter! Odd that didn't show up in my searches but what can you do! I feel a little more comfortable going ahead with my insane pickup plans now.
  2. Hey Chris! I've never finished a guitar with it as I prefer tung oil, but when working with tru-oil on gun stocks I usually find 000 steel wool doesn't leave too much of a mess as long as you buff lightly. Once I get to the final coat I just buff with a finish conditioner on a soft cloth to keep the sheen and it's usually pretty smooth. It'd depend on what wood you're using though, the walnut gun stocks tend to be a lot more resilient than traditional hardwoods used for guitar!
  3. Hey guys it's been a while since I've been in need of advice so hopefully this is a good question as I'm not totally sure on the answer! I am in the process of drawing up plans for a bass I want to make. While discussing with some friends my ideas for some crazy pickup setups one mentioned that spacing is super important. I have never had trouble in the past working with guitars but this is my first real scratch bass build. So my question is then on a bass is the spacing from the bridge to each different pickup incredibly important for the sound? And if so what are the benefits or hindrances to the sound of putting them outside the suggested placement? I assumed that like guitar the location of the strings over the pole pieces was all that mattered but I could be very wrong. It wouldn't be the first time! Thanks in advance to any who can help me out!
  4. Hey there guys! My friend and teacher Walt Young has released a new album called without words. It will be available soon. He is an exceptional musician and has posted a song on you tube for all to hear! Listen, comment, like, and/ or share to help him out! Thanks for reading and hopefully listening!
  5. Wow, tons of great info thanks alot guys. I think I like the tuning fork idea so I may go with that, I'd definitely need a control cavity acess panel though as I love to experiment with wiring alot. I plan to have an f-hole on top as well so this may turn out to be more of an extremely thin semi-hollow instead of the chambered solid body I originally intended it to be . Either way I've gotten alot of good feedback that I will definitely use in the build I hope to start it soon just waiting on some wood I ordered. As for the ideas you guys brought up about tone and sustain being currently in school for a physics major I could definitely try to prove my electricity and magnetism courses are worth something by shedding some light on the subject of the pickups. As you can well guess having the magnetic field travel through materials will affect it and in most cases reduce it so right away I would say this means more wood would weaken the magnetic field and result in less sustain. Having a solid block of wood surrounding the pickup would then change the field, every nuance and change of density caused by the grain would impart a different change to the field. If the guitar had chambers the field would travel through them as it does normally through air outside the guitar and would be unaffected though it would still be changed as it has to pass through some wood along the way. I originally asked the quesiton because I have no idea what sounds best tone wise. I would reason that the large chambers would give it a very bright sound as the resonating effect of the wood is taken away and left only to the air. Anyhow I'll certainly post whatever I have when I'm finished which may not be for a while due to said physics major .
  6. Hey guys, I'm looking to build a chambered solid body electric. I'm just wondering if theres any special routing pattern or anything that would give the best results. I've looked at warmoth style routing but I was thinking of doing the chambers a bit more open instead of small and packed together. Any info I could get on the topic would be appreciated. Thanks!
  7. All right I checked all my solders after I did it, I've been soldering for years know so I doubt thats the problem. I've wired it as I said above which is what they say to do so I think its ok that way. As for hieght I believe he was tinkering with it a bit so I don't think thats the problem either I guess we're just gonna pull it and try a new one, I know he plans on getting a PAF pro for the neck soon so we'll have to see what happens, thanks.
  8. He says it is, He was just comparing them by themselves so I would assume so.
  9. Hey guys, I recently did some electronics work for a friend in his Ibanez RG350. He wanted a Dimarzio evolution put in so I did it, following ibanez and dimarzio's respective wiring diagrams I removed the old INF-4 pickup, red from switch space 1 white from switch space 6 and bare from ground. I then put the Dimarzio Evolution in as suggested by dimarzio for the 4 wire conductor, red to hot position in this case switch space 1 white + black to the old white position switch space 6 and green + bare to ground. Having done this we plugged it in and it seemed fine but now he is complaining of the evolution sounding very bright and tinny compared to the INF-3 in the neck. Also when he tries to sweep the notes get all muddy and lost (and no this is not due to him playing bad ). Tapping also results in unstaisfied preformance as according to him the output is weak and he has to tap twice as hard to get the same output as the inf pickups. And finally he says theres about 50% less sustain coming from it. Some people I have talked to have suggested it may be out of phase though I don't think it sounds characteristic of a phase shift from what I heard and seeing as how I have followed the diagrams I don't know what to suggest to him, so I'm coming to you guys to bail me out If it were my guitar I'd tinker with it until I got right it but I don't have it in hand and don't want to ruin it so any ideas what the problem may be? Thanks for your help. PS: here are the diagrams from Ibanez and Dimarzio Ibanez: Dimarzio:
