  1. The guitar has an individual mini switch fr each pickup so I already get every combination of pickups possible. I think I will try the phase wiring to see if I like that. I just don't like the coil tap with these pickups and am tryin to find a use for the push pot so I think phase switching is what I'll do with it.
  2. Just go into a music store an tell them you want to try the distortion pedals. Talk to them and listen to what they have to say. Play all of them that have even the most remote chance of getting the sound you want and decide what you want. I'm tellin you though you will be able to find the sound at least close to what you want out of that little vox. I did pretty good back when I had a 10 watt solid state vox (not a valvetronix) so with yours and whatever guitar you have I bet you can find it. Even my old little solid state 10 watt ibanez amp I still have from when I started can cough out some pretty good AC/DC. What exactly is your guitar? What specific song are you trying to get the sound of?
  3. I actually quite like the soun that knophler is getting on that song!
  4. I will look into what you guys are saying. I quite like the sound that arlo west is getting with his circuit and that is why I wanted to try this I'm just not sure how I'de wire with the push pot instead of a switch. As for the pot it came on the guitar it is an ibanez saber from either 87 or 88 and the only non stock feature is that it's been refinished from yellow to black
  5. I was planning on using the circuit used by arlo west on one of his guitars in this video he has on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WWZcVMevP0c It doesn't seem like he's usin batteries in this Also, I dont slap the pot hard howeverI have a few times nad seems pretty durable! It also is a very smooth volume pot that rolls off very easily
  6. Guitar center annoys me. I went in about a year ago and said I wanted to try some basic $400-600 strats and one guy helps me well after another trys to sell my $3000 PRS les paul copy and some other $1500 sg copy. I eventually picked out a really nice $400 ash bodied strat copy and when I asked if they could give a set up they said they didn't do that and I would have to pay for the guy that comes in on saturday to do it and the instructions the guy gave me on how to set it up were completely wrong however I found directions here on project guitar. The only guitar chain I like is the one daddy's junky music in boston the other ones I've been to aint so good. Guitar Center is only good on their occasional good sales. Most of them they put the price up 30% and mark it down 40% so you only save 10% but it seems like you save more. My guitar was marked as $100 off regular price of $500 but the regular price other than that sale was $400 which was still a great deal for how much guitar I got from that thing, tuning stability could be a little better but overall it's great.
  7. I really don't have any idea so wait for someone else to respond but maybe you could oil it? I've had various other problems with pots but never something like that. I even played a guitar with one that worked like normal until about 3/4 of the way down it would suddenly jump in volume.
  8. I've been thinking about rewiring the push pull (or as I like to call it a slap) pot wired to a coil tap on my ibanez saber with a cocked wah circuit. I'm just wondering how I would go about doing this. I'm pretty sure it makes use of a 0.01 uf capacitor going to ground but I'd just like to confirm this and see if anyone could give a diagram of how it would be done. I also think I'm stickin a dimarzio fred in the bridge postion (surprise, surprise) for a bit more bite but that I know how to do. Thanks for the help guys. And I just have to say that the pot on this guitar is amazing rather than push/pull it's spring loaded so you just have to push it to activate or deactivate it.
  9. I'm not the best guy for rockabilly tones but putting the treble up on the amp, the bass down a bit, and using a little compression should help. For pickups I'd say go with something like the dimarzio ej custom or tv jones pickups, maybe even try fitting some gretsch pickups.
  10. The ball bearing idea seems pretty interesting. To me each sample sounded good and mostly the same. Most tonal differences could probably be taken care of with the eq on the amp. Does anybody know a source for ball bearings to use on tremolos as I was thinking since the knife edges on my ibanez are old and could use replacing that I could try building a holder for ball bearings that will fit the slot that the knife edges insert into on it.
  11. Try audacity just do a google search on it. It's free, easy to use, and has many features. It may not be what professionals use but it works well and sound quality is good. It's free sou you can easily download and try it and just delete off of your computer if you don't like it.
  12. I could have that in about half the time. I grow that much hair in a year......... And it's also curly so what goes down to my shoulders reaches down past my nipples when pulled down. When I grow it out it looks alot like robert plant. The sideburns and facial hair are starting to grow in too. Is it also wierd that the inch of fingernail the average human grows in a year grows on me in about a month or two which forces me to clip them every couple of days.
  13. Psw really nailed it I think. WHat I was trying to get at in my other post wast that Page got his sound and many variations of it with many different combinations of gear. Some people can have the perfect gear and sound nothing like him. In the past couple of months I've practiced alot of his technique and I'd say now a could cop away with some his tones on most guitars and amps. You could have Page's actual gear and sound nothing like him then someone else could have a cheap plywood chinese made guitar and a tiny .5 watt amp and sound like him. If you are looking for a good overdrive for the sound then I would recomend the digitech screamin blues and bad monkey overdrives but first practice your technique, lower any gain and compression, and keep the mids from being scooped. I loosely remember playing a similar vox amp that got good zeppelin sound with mids i between mid and all the way up, treble a little behind that, and bass in between the two on I think the crunch setting.
  14. I played the regular ec version without the floyd recently and I thought that it balances quite well and gets a good tone that worked great for alot of heavier rock and the neck pickup I really liked. I just got a bargain on a guitar at a shop in boston. It's an 87 or 88 Ibanez saber made in japan all original hardware, electronics, and everything. It was only $300 with a setup included and it just feels better than any other guitar I've ever played and I usually prefer larger bodies and necks but this tiny guitar is absolutely amazing. I'll be picking it up when setup is finished. The black finish has a couple scratches but they are minor and it is still a great deal. As for gibson type guitars one of the best les pauls I've played before was a firebrand les paul. It had a thinline walnut body that gave it a tone somewhere in between a les paul and sg. Another good one is the ibanez art series which has a few good les pauls in it at discount prices. I got new strings on the epiphone and really does sound great now. Unfortunately my regular guitar shop was out of bone nuts and saddles, all they had was plastic so I'll be getting those later.
  15. Jimmy Page actually used vox amps quite alot after the first couple albums. And who know that his tele had really thin strings on it (8s) and his supro was not too different from a fender twin but he used a solasound tonebender fuzz pedal in front of it. But Jimmy used many amps and the marshalls were only used live. In studio he used a few supros, vox amps, hiwatts, and I think he had a couple fenders. As for guitars he had multiple strats, three teles (1 ruined after the first tour), I believe 4 les pauls that he used in studio including the black beauty that was stolen, a fender xii, a rickenbacker, a danelectro (which was said to be used only live and that a tele was used for recording what sounds like it), and of course he used the doubleneck sg live. I studied this for a while but I am not saying that I am totally accurate as page never really fully evaluted on his studio gear to the public.
