  1. Hey Guys, I need a little bit of help identifying this type of neck through joint.

    http://www.ibanezregister.com/images/image...ez_0189_400.jpg

I want to get that kind of neck through joint on my new custom. I was just wondering what the correct name for that type of joint is. Would it be called a heel-less neck through joint or would be it be called something like an ultra access neck through joint or perhaps something else?

Btw, what does heel-less mean? I’ve heard it been used around, but i'm not entirely sure what it means.

Anyways, sorry for the n00bish questions.

I would totally appreciate any help given. Thanks a lot peeps

really thats just a standard neck-thru construction with a particularly low neck to body transition, I dont think that itis any particular design

  2. Thanks alot guys.

Although how do u apply it and how thickly? I would presume that a credit card might work, but to me standard epoxy would be really thick? I will have to try something.

The reson I asked was that people seemed to say that it made the figuring pop more? I have used Rustins plastic coating before with fairly good results, which is closer to a laquer.

  3. I think there's a larger issue here than one guy who wants to build a forgery for personal use.

If PG as a whole allows one imitation to be shown without negative commentary, it is (to me anyway) tacit approval. That says to the entire world that Project Guitar endorses and encourages forgery and fraud. Even though one person doesn't intend to defraud anyone, ever, it might just show the wannabe crook new ways to take other people's money. Not cool. Everyone has to make the decision for himself what is immoral, but what is illegal is on paper and is not too difficult to interpret.

Here's an idea: if you don't want to catch a bunch of crap over using a stolen trademark, just don't show pics of it.

    Valid point and well put.

You don't need to apologize... I bet 99% of the people on this forum have used or are still using illegal downloaded software and music

    Also very valid!

Anyway mate good luck with it and hope it turns out well.. Next you'll have to do one completely from scratch to finish... Its not as hard as you might expect as long as your careful and go at a reasonable pace.

  4. Try asking a lawyer the same question. Your beloved dad (sure he's a nice bloke) has no idea what he's talking about, although no doubt, he has the best intentions. Ask you father what he would do if someone was impersonating him, without trying to make money, running around the streets, or advertising himself under your fathers name/job title. What would he say then?

The reason I asked my 'beloved dad' as you so kindly put it, was that he is respected and highly certified in his field and for the past 15 years of life he has had to deal with legal proceedings of one the most professional establishment's in the world. So THATS why I asked him, not becasue 'I wanted to know what Daddy thought', but because he does actually know wat he's taliking about.

AND I have asked a lawyer (albiet she not quite got her degree yet, but she was sure that as long as the guitar WILL NOT be passed on in any way. There is nothing wrong).

So Im afraid I will have to disagree Perry, I trust my sources not becasue 'I trust my daddy and friends', but becasue I trust the person who has had well over 15 years dealing with buisiness conduct and court proceedings more than yours.

  5. First of all.. great job!!

Second, I actually support JonnyC here, Although I respect you very much Perry, I find your comments sometimes harsh and not constructive at all.

To my knowledge, there is nothing wrong with putting a gibson decal on it as long as he is not going to sell it or profit from it in any way. The whole point of fraud is using someone elses reputation to gain profit from and in this case he's not.

I can see for a professional luthier this is a bit different, but for a hobby there is no problem.

I just checked with my father who is a Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute (i.e. he knows his stuff) and he says theres nothing wrong as long as hes not gaining any sort of profit from it.

keep up the good work bud.

  6. Right well the neck is sanded to 600grit and I have solved the problem about using rear bolt lock-nuts. Also it has had one coat of Danish oil dilute with 20% white spirt to help it penatrate.

Im afraid the piccy's are rubbish as

    a) our camara is crap

    B) Half the lights have just blown in the workshop

    c) Im not very good a taking photo's :D

Can't wait till I finish this!!!!!

Any suggestions for Pickups? I play anything from blues to Death Crushing Heavy Metal :D

......Actually more of the Heavy metal, so I need PU's that will be fairly versatile, but are really good gainy PU's sort of like EMG 81's. I might put a calibrated set of BareKnuckle Nailbombs in it which are just what I am looking for, but They are a little expensive for me being a student and all that so Im gonna wait a while till I have a job again. Thing is I already have one and now I find I can't stand any other brand of PU's!

I was thinking some Kent Armstrong ones?

    Thanks

  7. Cheers!!

Well I made th neck roughly, then cut two MDF templates, one neck sized and then one 1.5mm narrower on each side ffor the FB.

I then used a router and used double sided tape to attach the templates. and used a router with bearing guide to trim them.

Then glued the FB to the neck central to it. then glued the binding to the FB and trimed it with a small plane.

  8. just an update on the neck,

nearly finished... just having fun trying to get the FR nut holes aligned in the neck, which is proving a bit tricky. next time Im definately gonna get one of those lock-nuts which screw in from the top!!

sanded to 240 grit and awaiting final shaping and sanding before sanding higher and then Danish oiling.

just a quick question... what do you guys put on the fretboard? Im just worried that Im gonna make my lovely black ebony FB go all glossy and crap.

  10. Right well Ive had a number of problems so far which have limited the progree, but touch wood, I think Im ok.

    1st big problem....

I bought a U-channel type truss-rod from Feline guitars, but becasue the neck is so thin, I couldn't use it. so I had to go and I used the traditional type as this allowed for a much shallower depth, plus I prefer having a greater amont of wood in the neck including the wood fuillet that goes on top of it.

    2nd big problem....

After glueing in the TR, I found the tap I had cut didn't fit the nut properly, (bloody American backward measurements :D). So I had to chisel it out and start over again. finding the right rod is bl**dy hard in England as it's all metric here mostly.

    misc_0385.jpg

    http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y125/mcmeat51/misc_0382.jpg

so I then made another truss rod, but becasue I had epoxy-resined the anchor piece in, I had to melt the resin using a oxy-acetelenye welder!!! :D

    http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y125/mcmeat51/misc_0379.jpg

    3rd big problem....

Then found after glueing in the secound TR that the nut was proud of the neck where th FB goes and also in turn where the lock nut would sit.... "Oh B*ll*cks!!!"

so I have just finished glueing some ebony veneer to the top to give a little bit of hight over the nut.

    misc_0375.jpg

    and the body so far

  11. basically Ive just glued in my Truss rod which is around 4mm and used a 10/32 tap on it for my fender style nut. (bl**dy American silly backward dimensions :D )

Anyway gave it a test and hey presto the nut keeps slipping threads under tension.... damn Im an idiot

what can I do without having to go through the messy process of tearing out the lacewood fillet I just glued in and putting in a different one?

theres about 12mm of unproperly tapped truss rod showing to play with.

thanks guys this has really annoyed me and I need a hand

    cheers

  12. Right simple answer

    Poplar is very bad idea

becasue its about similar to alder, it just doesn't have the right characteristics to sound any good as a FB. You could try it but in my view, to put all the effort that goes into making a FB in the first place, you might as well use a decent wood such as ebony, rosewood maple or any other hard, dense wood.

Im making my Jem out of poplar, and while I think/hope it will be good for the body, I really wouldn't use it for the FB.

    Anyway just hope this helps

    Matt

  13. Ahh rollocks! yea I messed them up, Im not very good at thye whole linking thingy

Got the truss rod today, slight teething problem as when I route the channel, I only get 2mm between the bottom of the channel and the back of the neck so Im wondering if I carry on and hope it will be enough, or I try the vintage style which I was originally going to use as its thinner and less deep pocket.

    Any ideas?

    cheers
