  1. I purchased a used strat a couple of years ago with that same problem. A friend of mine that owns an auto bodyshop suggested I try meguiars "clear coat body scrub" to remove the scratches. It has a very mild abrasive for removing swirls in clearcoats on cars. Being lazy I didn't even strip the guitar of hardware, just cleaned it good and applied the stuff with these great cotton rags I get from that same buddy. When I was satisfied that the scratches were gone (about 45 minutes of hand polishing) , I finished up with meguiars #7 show care glaze. great stuff. You should be able to pick up both products at an auto parts store or Walmart
  2. From the symptoms described, digital clipping for sure. I ran into this same problem when I first attempted to record via the computer. What I had to do, and the only advise I might give is to purchase an entry level interface if you want it to sound decent. I picked up an M-Audio Quattro. Pretty cheap and sounded great. I have now gone nuts and purchased a Mackie HDR24/96 and 32-8 board but still from time to time, do quick punch ins to cubase with the quattro. A search on musiciansfriend has a number of USB interfaces for $100 or less.
  3. 3,4 I have been building/destroying guitars since I was 15 and got my first crappy Kent SG. I modded it to make it look/sound/play better. Look better mostly, HS garage band! Finally destroyed it, but learned a lot and I was infected with the passion. Throughout the years I have been asked "why don't you just buy them?' or "why did you change it?". My wife asks "why do you need more tools! you have a hardware store in your shop!" and "you have a room full of guitars!" Buying is not the point, construction is. It is my passion. Like the perfect round of golf. But, you guys know all about that. As a new member, it is welcome to find a group that shares this passion. In my short time here, I have found great tutorials and advice (more than I care to admit) that has me say "ah! yes, that is the right way to do it!" To me it's almost like learning a secret. Example: Bursts have never been one of my strengths, and I have avoided doing them. Seeing some of the tutorials and examples I was excited to begin digging in and learning the correct method to do them. I am finally feeling a little more confident in doing them now. In fact, my six year old wants me to carriburst his bike! I know I will never build my perfect guitar. Each one has a little good and bad. But I keep trying to make the scale move over to the good side a little more on each one. But again, you guys know all about that. that is why I'm here.. Gary
  4. As a new member I had no idea how hard it is to pick! Fantastic guitars one and all. I have been a Randy fiend all of my life (gotta have a polkadot V!) , but I believe even he would have voted for the doubleneck!
  5. Last time I used UPS, I overnighted about 200K in network equipment to a hospital in Laredo, TX. Next day no stuff. Three days later the stuff was found in Atlanta! After much cursing, pulling hair and spitting on the ground, I got UPS to send my gear via a Lear back to Texas. Well, stuff got to the hospital a few hours later and my guys found half of the routers destroyed. Needless to say when I purchased my Mackie board and HDR, I had it sent to the house via Fedex! arriving in pristine condition I might add. Happy to hear your ending was better than mine.. Gary
  6. Greetings All, I am new to the forum and have been lurking about for a week, finding my way about the site and having a great time poring through the wealth of knowledge and tutorials all of you have amassed. I feel like the sorcerer's aprentice! My hat's off to you all. My question and or comment is, in my travels I too have noticed a lot of the pictures/emoticons missing, but for me have been user specific. For me, I cannot see Drak's pics and a couple of others. Quite frustrating I might add as the comments are generally "OMG look at that!" I did a little test and found that it is not date related as far as I can tell, as other much older posts have pics embedded. Nor could I find an issue with my connection, FW or browser Any suggestions would be great! Gary
