  1. As far as I'm aware there is no set difference, the difference in width/string spacing will only affect the width of the neck. Now not being able to intonate the bridge will will cause a bit of tuning problems, as different gauge strings require different lengths to tune up properly. Hope that helps, but that's just the basics of it, I don't know the science behind it yet
  2. Im working on my first build, im just making sloped jig to use with my router to make a 4.5 degree pocket. There was a thread not long ago that touched up on figuring the angle you need for your neck, if really needed.
  3. Congrats on the new machine! The best way to keep figure is to get the best blades available, and have them properly sharpened, i co-oped in a pattern shop and the (rather average) thickness planer would have the boards looking their best while keep a perfectly flat and clean surface only using a blade upgrade. I've always been told the machine doesn't have to be top of the line, only the cutter/blade (for what ever kind of machine it is) Oh and Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays everyone!
  4. yeah i took it all into consideration keeping my considerably low $300 budget in mind while making it look good so i was just wondering if theres any thing i can do to get closer to the tone im looking for - balanced mids, somewhat punchy bass, and clean highs. I'm working with sapele one piece body, hard maple neck, ebony fretboard, and 1/32 (i think) curly sycamore veneer. Hardware is TOM bridge, 2 hums, push-pull volume and a 3 way switch and perhaps a tone.
  5. alright makes things easy for me Ive kept the fret access in mind, and it should be easy enough up to the 22nd, but its a 24 fret because im tired of running out of the last couple of frets every now and again, they're just not important enough for me to care about easy access.
  6. So I'm making my first guitar and was well under way, then decided my body design was too small after making the jigs (better now than scraping a good sapelli blank). So now that i have to redesign the body slightly i was wondering how the body affects tone. I've heard a few different things, like bottom is bass related and the horns are treble, or that there's a treble and a bass horn, or that it matters very little and its mostly in the materials. So i figured id ask this before i go back to the drawing board. I'm making a double cutaway due to preference too.
  7. Nice find! i just had to pay a small fortune to get a a good piece of sapele
  8. Whenever i go to post a question the answer is already there for me, but his clears alot up for me thanks guys, i just can't believe i didn't think of something so simple lol. Time to make a slopped jig for the router
  9. Hey just joined this forum after reading through the site a million times (give or take a few) as this is my first build. Great site lots of info hope to be able to learn and contribute whenever possible.
