  1. This is actually really cool to see in a compressed format. The real win here is that the guitar didn't vanish also!!
  2. Hey! I was going to tell you how nice that finish looks, but something is horribly wrong with my editor in your thread. Do you have the power to look at that on the backend?

Several times when trying to respond to a thread it would be prepopulated with previous comments, or weird quote frames that I can't get rid of. Now it won't let me type.

RE: the guitar, just put the hardware on and play it already!

  3. Damn! Put a leash on that thing. This is really good info. Maybe after it cures more, I'll do a rough level to help see better and then address any areas with nitro drop fills. I can do some overall flow coats after that and they should be even smoother. One thing I've always wondered is, can I reshoot coats over this for an indefinite time period? Let's say next spring, can I shoot a couple more coats and it will melt into the top layer?
  4. And now I wait. As the nitro shrinks, I can see a couple areas that could use minor filling. Nitro drop fills would need repeated applications, I'm considering CA drop fills after an initial light leveling sand. Then maybe 1-2 good flow coats on top? Sound like a plan?
  5. Well, remember I wanted it transparent black before. LOL. Then I was going to do an edge burst, more of a tobacco with little to no red. So this has evolved into this. As far as the tiger eye color, pretty much dead on. My reference point for tiger eye finish is David Mykas doublecut.
  6. I spraying #1 while I'm at it. It suffers from lots of small defects and a pretty poor attempt at refinishing it to solid black before the clear. Black is so brutal in it's honesty, I'm just happy to get it painted, and some new hardware. Believe me she's happy considering where she came from. She's at least lacquered instead of rattle white (with black vinyl tape zebra stripes ), and 24.75" vs 25.5" scale, real TOM bridge, and probably a Nazgul pup.
  7. Wife calls and says she's off work early and wanted me to meet her for a date. Uh . . . Of all the times?! Two days of family Thanksgiving time should fix her up good.
  8. Coupla little air bubbles on the front, tiny gap on the binding. I'll lay these today and see where I'm at. Unfortunately I probably won't get another spray day for awhile. Good news is my inexperience had me spraying pretty light coats when I thought they were heavier. Have to dig into that trigger and slow down to lay it thick. So, my coats were thin and flashing off fast. It's all quite smooth and really satisfying. I did accidentally press up against the headstock face once and about pooped when I saw it. A quick thick blast and leave it alone let it flow back out nicely.
  9. Finally used my SATA clone to get some shellac sealer coars on. WAY more fun than cans! This thing is on fire! I know this is blasphemy, but I'm kinda tired of it right now. Tons of hours has left me weary and I'm enjoying the effect building way too much. Once it's done I'll be excited again.
  10. The number of guitars built on Workmates must be astronomical.
  11. Ha! Cheesecloth wiper, but I'm gonna keep my eyes peeled now! Maybe I caught a gremlin?! Drinking the denatured alcohol?!
  12. Binding scraped. Small glue areas scraped and touched up. Nearly ready for sealing. Gratuitous "lay on the bardware" shots.
  13. It hasn't missed my attention just how cool that rosewood dye looks, and how close it is to my original black semi opaque plan. Better than that really. But the real coup here is the magic yellow and what that does to the amber base to push it into hypersonic tiger eye overdrive. Those last two pics are dryed dye. It's very very flat. When it's wet, it makes you cry.
  14. Big weekend. Got everything bound, scraped, sanded. Front and back sanded back (again), new layer of the rosewood dye front and back, sanded back, then amber overall including the sides. Then my final wipe of magic yellow/amber. The new batch of that was even better than the first! Since I was bored, I also started building some DIY effects boxes. Skreddy P19 and Catalinbread Galileo clones.
  15. Aha. I hadn't considered spraying dye. Yours is an incredibly smooth transition. I've seen some rubbed dye bursts that look good but spraying seems the best route.
  16. Here is the straight amber and straight faux rosewood dye on ash scrap. My instinct says amber. I can always put more on top of that. There is also a little rosewood over amber but its dark and still wet. That rosewood dye is actually closer in color to the rosewood than it appears - ESP with the black sand back on my particular test piece. But, that's what got me into trouble in the first place! I'm not opposed to it by itself, it's very similar to the sides of that LP I posted up above.
  17. Acetone and binding scrap glue FTW. For plastic there is no better way.
  18. You just blew my mind there. Can you clarify that? You spray and sand back your dyes? Right now, the body is ready for an overall amber (again) just like my earlier video. If I did edge burst, it would be more like the Dean with tinted lacquer. Or, it would stay as-is and be like that no burst LP.
  19. Thought I'd share this. In my reference pics, these are examples of edge bursts vs larger bursts or sunbursts. Of note is the difference between the Dean tinted spray vs the Icemans sand back dye burst. The Iceman may also have an edge tint sprayed, but clearly the burst goes into the figure.
  20. Here are my two patches, top and underside of top horn. Easily my least favorite part of the whole build. You can just see the line at the back of the top patch. Underside has a color difference, but the grain matches. It should hide ok.
