  1. Hi guys, I'm just wondering if anyone has cracked open one of the ESP/LTD EC series (set neck), and removed the neck? I got one for a dirt cheap so it's become a project and ... long story short, fretboard is off, and I spent the rest of the day trying to remove the neck. I've tried heat gun + putty knife, iron/steam + putty knife, injecting steam into the joint (as much as possible) ... not even 1mm of budge from the stupid thing. Any ideas? Any help/experience would be greatly appreciated Oh, and to makes things more interesting, it seems the guys over at ESP have done away with the usual neck tenon design and left a lot more wood on the non-cutaway side, so there's a whole lot more mating surface for the joint. I've got pics if anyone wants to see it.
  2. Thanks guys, came in at 36 so I'm gonna assume it's hard maple.
  3. Hi guys, I'm just wondering if anyone can confirm if this is indeed rock maple, or if someone has maybe told me a little white lie? http://imageshack.us...3/img0150lg.jpg http://imageshack.us...9/img0148ey.jpg I know they're not the best pictures, but I hope they'll do. Thanks Troy
  4. Hey guys, I've had a look at the other posts on this forum, and I'm either blind, dumb (a huge possibility ) or no one has really asked this question before. So my question of the day is: How thick should a neck blank be for a set neck? I mean can I use a 3/4-1" blank and glue it to the body (similar to an Ibanez RG neck), or would I better off glueing a heel/step onto it for more body contact (like a Gibson Les Paul) At the same time, how far should the neck extend into the body for the 3/4-1" style of set-neck (if at all do-able/advisable)? The reason I ask is that I'm looking at sculpting the join to feel like a neck-through and don't want the whole thing to fail dismally. Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Troy
  5. So i'm converting my Ibanez 7620 from the stock pickups, to EMG 707s. I've enlarged the pickup routes to accomodate the larger EMGs, however I am wondering how deep I need to go? At present they're sitting maybe 5mm below the fretboard height. Maybe someone thats previously done this conversion before can help. How much clearance have you got between the pickups and strings to avoid string pull/extra distortion?
  6. Thanks for the input guys. I've cleaned up the joins and re-fit the neck, however if I have everything sitting flush the neck is still offline. I've noticed I have enough play to move the neck and get everything straight, but this leaves a 2mm gap on one side of the neck/body join. Would I better off glueing in a shim there, or sand down the other side of the neck until both sides are flush? Again, thanks for all the help.
  7. So i brought a cheap guitar off eBay that as described as "small crack at base of neck" ... turns out theat guy knew nothing about guitars, and the "small crack" was actually the neck being snapped off from the body. I'd done the deed and removed the neck completly from the body, and made the mistake of reattaching the neck without measuring anything. This has meant time spent a week later removing the fretboard and then the neck again, but this time dealing with dried glue. What I've found is that it appears as though the strings aren't aligned correctly. I've uploaded some pictures to demonstrated (i've used a cotton line on both the high and low E strings to demonstrate). What I'm wanting to know is what you guys would recommend to fix this? Do I make a new neck and attach that? I'm not wanting to junk this as it's turning out to be a good learning process. Below are some pictures of the offending instrument. Image1 Image2 Image3 Image4
  8. I'm new here, so hey everyone. Just sort of doing minor repairs/mods and hoping to work my way up into full on builds. So anyway heres my question. I currently have an Epiphone G-400 (Goth) that I've mod-ed, and am wanting to put one of the aluminum pickguards on it. Only problem is I've lost my original and cant make a template (plus i only have a hacksaw to cut through the aluminum ) so I'm wondering if anyone out there knows where i can get one from, or what Gibson replacement will fit. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
