  10. woo! I used a Behringer V-amp II - that was plugged into my computer through the line-in input. I recorded and mixed everything in CoolEdit Pro, and I programmed the drums in Guitar Pro 4 before converting the midi file format into a WAV file. the V-amp is a pain to work with, and is cheap... but gets some good tones as you can see. hell of a lot of work, but I had great fun and hopefully I'll get round to doing some more tracks soon. i'm glad you guys liked it! Roman
  11. thanks guys, i appreciate your time and comments. and yeah... I'm a huge maiden fan!
  12. not sure this is the forum to post this in, but this certainly was a 30 hour project and now its completed.... anyway, I was wondering if you'd like to give me some feedback on a song that I've just recorded. I composed, arranged, recorded and mixed the whole song in my bedroom... It is my first proper composition (and recording...), so I'm quite anxious about people's response to this. please go to: http://romansub.dmusic.com and critique away! I'm also very interested to hear which guitarists/bands this song might remind people of. peace, Roman (feel free to move this elsewhere if this is the wrong forum). oh yeah.... this is of a metal nature!!!
  13. hey man, there's no reason why you cant. i practically learnt to play the guitar over this piece.... i've been practicing this thing for like 2 years solid... and still not enough to be able to play it flawlessly on stage... you can do it if you really believe in yourself! Roman
  14. here's the video.... only a 30 sec extract unfortunately... http://s40.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=3HBHT37...VL2W5PXJJLDYAF9 i'm trying to get some better video and pics but no luck so far (these are pictures i could find) http://s40.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1E08B1K...FS3TN0R20INNKAD http://s40.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=22JTZTX...3M1EIFBZZX5M2XN i was using my Washburn EC29 into my Mesa/Boogie DC-10... which you can see in one of the pics... no way was i gonna use the little substanard amps at the front! i think you can hear in the video that it was loud some mistakes in that section but overall i'm pretty pleased... i go even more crazy (or so i'm told) after the clip finishes, so its a shame that that bit is not on video. Roman
  15. so how do i post or attach stuff here? i cant see a box for file attachment.. or is there some server taht i can use?? Roman
  16. woo!! that was THE most fun thing that i've ever done. it went pretty well, i started off well with the trill intro... then during the arpeggios i felt my hands shaking so bad but i carried on and it was okay, i hit the last note, G# clean. i think i did a Vai expression there. then i sort of calmed down as i saw some impressed faces and i then went okay through the main melody and the octave jumping section, which all went smoothly except a mess up in the first part, but i carried on so it was okay. then on the chords i went pretty crazy and then proceeded to do some 'over the top of the fretboard' wankerage, which went down really well. then i finally hit a nice divebomb and played two chords to end it all off (i changed the ending a bit). unless you know the piece all the stuff above wont make much sense but basically, i had the biggest adrenaline rush. i cant remember much of what happened because i was concentrating so hard. i only got the above description with aid of photos and video clips. cranked up my amp so much that people could hear me two floors below in the school and outside! it sounded beautiful however, completely worth the effort. i cannot recommend enough bringing in a half stack / big GOOD amp for performances.. all other guitarists' tone was tinny and small... so that was great. i went off thinking i messed up SO much, but everyone said i was great.... i guess it was because i didnt stop and did enough showing off tricks and stage moves to cover up the adjudicator (this being a contest) called me a legend, and although didnt give me a prize (this chinese girl playing a piano at speed approximately twice that of anything by Michael Angelo Batio - and with two hands, won) he was very complimentary. everyone else gave me lots of praise too.... got very drunk that night celebrating, however no good looking girls turned up to post concert party, so that was a shame... i thought my chances wouldnt be too bad after that after my solo piece, my house did a 'choir' cover of Jackson 5's 'Blame it on the Boogie' in which i just rocked out playing some funk and a slightly silly over the top solo... i got a bunch of photos and as it stands only a short video clip, but i am trying to get a full length one.. if you tell me how to post it here / attach it, i will share the pics.... maybe video too. basically, was the most fun thing ever, for me. though now, i cannot stand to play that piece ever again... i played it waaaaaaaaaaay too many times now. there's a feeling of a small emptiness in my life now tyhat i've fullfilled taht particular dream.... though it was a great experience and everyone know thinks i'm a 'legend'... i think even the music teachers were impressed. i heard some muttering about there being too much gain on the amp, and it being too loud.... but that's too bad! yeah, so thanks a lot everyone. i definetely recommend takign up any opportunity to perform to anyone.. i for one cant wait to get back onto a stage.. such a wild and liberating experience i will try to post the pics, if i can... Roman
  17. well, its 3 nights left! though i'm going to see the Mighty English power metal band Dragonforce on thursday, so cant really practice much that night! as well as being severely exhausted on friday morning... methinks i best stay away from the front and wear some earplugs to avoid being messed up on friday!!! i've practiced more and more and got my stage moves more or less sorted. after some hesitation i ahve after all decided to take my amp there on the day. i just hope no stupid kids will go up to it to damage it, or severely mess up the EQ without me noticing... so yeah, a BIG thank you for your advice and time to post in this thread. thank you also to Wes, who really made me consider my attitudes, even though i wasnt as guilty of ego-building as was suggested... there was a little bit of a quiet inner ego i'm not sure whether i can do anything else now but practice... i could bring some JD / vodka and have a few sips before hand, but i doubt it will help and might have terrible consequences.... so i'll try to do it completely sober and get trashed afterwards at the party instead... i think. peace, Roman
  18. i'm not a lyricist, but the approach that I take with writing music is to never force it. i never sit down for 2 hours a day coming up with ideas.. that's forcing stuff. in my experience, all my best stuff comes from random relaxed experimentation. i'd just play my guitar, and would randomly get an idea.. would work on it until i run out of inspiration, then i'd come back to it at another point. perhaps you could try the same approach. as far as i know, all musicians experience periods of unproductiveness. it is very annoying, but in my experience, brute force will never work. so maybe go see some films, or go to an art gallery. or walk in the park, think about life, and ideas will come to you themselves.
  19. good point yes. as people get more specialised in an instrument, they begin appreciating the intruments nuances more. it is not only true of yngwie fans however. i am lucky enough to be relatively good friends with two amazing classical musicians - a pianist and a violin player. some of the music they listen to and play is almost unlistenable to me... because its so complicated, multilayered and all out crazy. such music is almost only open to the classical musician elite... same with 'acid' or modern jazz... some of it so obscure, that i for instance cant enjoy listening to it. my teacher on the other hand loves it.. so perhaps not only guitarists like yngwie and his fans ought to be accused of getting too technical / complicated in their music!
  20. ALOT of people called Yngwie egotistical too ← that's because he is.there is a fine line between confidence and insufferability. sounds to me like he "pwns" you.just because you can sweep in no way makes you better.most guitarists should just check the ego a bit,or they just end up sounding like egotistical pricks...and then nobody wants to credit them for what they do good. do you think anyone is going to take you more seriously because you constantly brag on yourself,or rather because you are modest and let your playing speak for you? ← i guess sarcasm was lost through the internet. of course he is a better guitarist than me. since 'pwn' is a silly internet word, i gave it a silly meaning - i never wanted to say that i actually OWNED him. there was the discussion of merits of jazz, so i tried to add my point that jazz is actually a very sophisticated genre that is far beyond the reach of many guitar players and that is not just a bunch of wrong notes. i regret if i sounded egoistical, or put more bluntly, a prick.
  21. i dont think it does.... its the truth. he cant play sweep arpeggios triplets at 160bpm, and I can. yet his phrasing is outstanding and he can improvise and play such chords that would dislocate my finger joints if i tried to play them. he can play pretty much anything from reggae and funk to acid jazz with some crazy time signatures... i cant. why imagine if i can see for myself!!! :-D alright, my school is only down the road, so I'm thinking about the logistics of this whole thing.. sounds plausible, if a little crazy. lol my mum's response to this idea was 'YOU WHAT!!??'
  22. right, thanks guys!! i've spoken to my guitar teacher about this.. now he's a real jazz maestro (though technically i can pwn him without too much trouble..) [he's still 20 times better than me as a musician...] anyway, what he said was in agreement with with the general consensus here has been...... practice!!! i've been putting in 1 - 2 hour a day practice session just on this one piece (and lol, i am getting sort of sick of it.. i dont think i'll play it again after the performance for a long time!) but i am honing in on a few imperfections etc... confidence is also building, somewhat. still, 2 weeks to go (exactly!), so thats about 18 hours of practice on this piece left.. and considering it'll be over in about 2 mins, i should be ok. i'm also working on a few stage moves and facial 'Vai' expressions as well as some whammy bar tricks... doing them seems to get me more relaxed in the practice runs. so.... so far so good, a tonne of thanks for everyone's advice so far... i will try to get hold of the video of the final thing to post here, or i will let you know how it all went at the very least. one thing i'm really interested in, is the reaction of the music teachers. my school doesnt think much of guitars... i mean i'm gonna have to be playing through a marshall MG amp (though i will use my friend's Mesa V-Twin as a pre-amp.... still gonna be a big step down from my mesa half stack at home ) - that's what they have in school. and being classical snobs, i will probably get dodgy looks when i come on stage especially as they've last seem me play around 4 years ago.. so playing Paganini on an electric guitar is gonna be controversial - to people who think the guitar is only good for a little jangly indie garage rock $hit or any other talentless 'guitarist' wearing the instrument below his knees coz its cool. i mean taht attitude is understandable, but somewhat damaging to those of us who treat the electric guitar as a R-E-A-L instrument. i'm worried about the sound. i dont think it is wise to bring in my 4x12 and my head JUST for a 2 min performance. so i have to use the 15 watt or whatever MG POS. V-twin will give me a pretty nice tone... but coz its a school hall, there's no chance of a PA or miking the amp... so how should i get the sound? i'm thinking ill put it up as loud as the amp will allow me to without blowing the crappy speaker of it....do you have any particular ideas about adjusting the EQ, reverb and overall volume? i'm a tone snob, and i'm one of those people who, if the tone sounds bad, find it difficult to play and lose enthusiasm - and i know i'll be dealing with a pretty bad live tone. i just hope it'll be good enough, same goes for my playing! peace, Roman
  23. thanks a lot for replies so far, a lot of food for thought... as far as band members... well there wont be any!! That's the thing, its gonna be me playing alone from start to finish.
  24. hi guys... I've finally decided to take part in my school's interhouse music competition... i'm playing the solo piece for my house. that is to say I've decided to play the above mentioned piece in front of about 400+ people, basically everyone I know. I've been practicing this piece for the last 2 years. Technically I've nailed it. BUT I've NEVER ever performed anywhere. Not even in front of 20 people. so..... How should I overcome stage fright??!! how can i avoid becoming so nervous that i forget the notes etc!! i'll be extremely grateful for any advice... there are still 2 weeks left before the competition, so if i need to learn to do anything there's still a bit of time! so... please help out!! Roman
  25. thanks for the answer, it was very helpful. however not all SD booster users are beginners with Squiers.. hell my my setup has cost me over $5000 by now... in slight defense of the modes switch on the SD pedal, i found it pretty cool as it does give a nice bigger warmer sound, which is great for soloing. other than that yes, it is rather useless, but with some amp and pickup combination it might work well. i dont doubt for a minute that 'cap for cap' construction of your pedal compared to SD's is superior. i wish you very best of luck with your pedal sales and production, hell, when my finances recover I might even shoot you a PM about a pedal that interests me. however i feel i should also add, for a mass produced pedal, the SD booster is built much better than majority of digitech, new boss pedals etc. but then it does have a near-boutique price, eh... peace, Roman
