Making Position Markers for Your Guitar

by Brian Johnson

I wanted to come up with a simple and economical way to make position markers with little chance of destroying the work I had done up to that point. I am sure that someone else has probably done this before, but since I haven't seen it yet, I will offer it to you hoping that you can use it on one of your projects.

All you need to get started is a 1/4" flathead screwdriver, a drill with a 1/4"bit, a 1/4" hand held hole punch (like kids use in school for their paper), and a handful of medium guitar picks in whatever color(s) suits your project.

Start by simply punching holes in the guitar picks, you should be able to get at least nine markers from each pick. I have had no problem at all punching medium guage picks, but that isn't to say you could not use heavier gauges if you desire.

Take your drill, and s-l-o-w-l-y drill a small indention in the fretboard where you want the marker to go (hopefully you have already laid that out on the board). You do NOT have to drill deep.

Once the hole is deep enough, take your screwdriver and gently clean out the hole so the marker will sit flush.

Using whatever adhesive you like, place the marker in the hole. The fit should be snug enough that you will have to use the handle of the screwdriver to press the marker into place.

That's it.
