Right to Left Hand Edge-LoPro Tremolo Conversion

By Brian Calvert

Please be careful performing this operation because shards of metal will fly and also the plate itself heats up quickly.
The Ibanez Edge and LoPro trems are unique in that the base plate comes from the factory with cavities already built into the bottom for either a right or left handed version. In order to change your tremolo over though you will first need to disassemble it.
Flip your base plate over so you can see the plug that needs to be drilled out and do just that using a 5/16" drill bit.
Stop once you see that you have started to drill through. This will allow you to center the drill bit for the next step.
Flip the Baseplate over and using the hole that is now visible line up a 3/8" drill bit and finish opening up the hole from the top. Continue the larger hole down approximately 3/16" deep into the top of the plate
Tap out the new hole using a 10 x 1.25 tap and clean up the hole. Test it for fit with the trem arm holder, then make any necessary adjustments.
Grab a piece of clear tape and place it over the original hole, then mix up a small dab of J-B Weld.
While it is freshly mixed the J-B Weld will pour off the end of your spatula so use this advantage to fill the edge's at the bottom of the cavity as much as possible. It is not necessary to completely fill the cavity to the top. Flip the plate over on occasion and inspect the top of the hole for bubbles. If they are present you can work them out from behind but be careful and use a toothpick.
You can actually reassemble the trem at this point even though the plug is still soft, Just take your time and continuously inspect the plug from both sides.
After it is assembled lay it down to finish curing the 6 hour dry time that is required for J-B Weld.
While your waiting if your new trem came with a new nut take your Dremel cutting wheel and nip the base of the high E and B grooves since they will now have to accommodate the Low E and A strings. Touchup is a breeze with enamel paint since you are not doing that much. Make sure you leave no burr's that can hurt strings in the grooves.
Now that the trem's original hole has had the time to harden file off and level it and grab a piece of matching foil tape or vinyl which makes a great cover and hide it. Your ready to assemble both onto your guitar and go!
