How To Add A Skunk Strip to a Neck

By Jeff Litchfield

This is best done PRIOR to truss rod and fret board installation, note that if this is installed on a factory neck, the trussrod route will need to be re-routed, if you go all the way through, and to be careful, IE only go 1/8" to 3/16" deep if the truss rod is not removed.

Tools needed:
1/4" flute bit
Plunge routers are ideal, but not necessary
straightedge

Lay the neck down on its face, or what will be the fret board side. Now clamp or screw the piece so it wont move.

You can go all the way through to the truss rod route. Best if you do, and even better if you route for the stripe before you route for the truss rod.

Lay your straight edges out so your router will stay in the center of the neck. Use a 1/4" flute bit. Route from the heel to the 3rd fret area (or wherever else you want it to be). Blow it out to get rid of the debris. Then glue your 1/4" koa, walnut, ebony, whatever in. make sure to put a 1/4" radius on one end. Otherwise you will have to fill a gap.

Sand and finish.

If the neck is already profiled, you will need to put your straightedges above the neck, though you might anyway. 2x4's work well. I use a piece of billet 90 degree angled aluminum for my straightedges.

And there you go. You went from this
