  1. This is great. I've been thinking of a violin build but I have been banned from starting any more projects. I will have to 'build' vicariously though this thread! Really neat work. Where did you find the plans?
  2. Nice build! I enjoy the way one of the wenge stripes goes right to the tip of the headstock. That finish is striking with all black hardware, thanks for the detailed how-to.
  3. Yeah, so would I! As this will be a personal guitar I do have a couple builds to get done before this one starts but as I have most of the wood I'll be using already anyway its pretty hard to resist just starting asap. I'll make a build thread when I do though
  4. verhoevenc: Yeah I love the wood choice on this one, thats quite a coincidence though! Never used or heard MEC pickups, but the website has some interesting info. We havnt decided which ones to go for yet so that could be an interesting option! Do you have any other suggestions that would suit this wood combo out of interest? Our Souls inc. Thanks a lot, really glad you like it! I am just waiting for parts to be sent through at the moment so I kind of have to futz about for now! More updates on the weekend however =)
  5. Yeah I can see the likeness, especially in the bottom horn, the way they point downwards slightly. I was thinking of doing offset dots as well.. Thats weird!
  6. Supp dudes?! Here's a custom 5 string bass I'm building for someone. Will try to keep this one updated, I can only build on the weekends at the moment due to work commitments but here we go! Specs: Body: Bubinga Top wood: Master grade Curly Maple Neck: Neck-through - Maple\Wenge|Maple|Wenge/Maple Fretboard: Birdseye maple Hardware: Hipshot 34 inch Scale Design: Mock up: (ignore the control layout/bridge type etc). Build: Heres the maple, 3m of it Bubinga body wood rough cut to thickness. One of the wenge laminates, I really like this stuff until it tries to stab or poison me.. Medullary rays =) My dog wondering whats in the parcel, Sorry Archie, its not food its: This! Bit of progress, planed and glued the neck, cut the bubinga wings. Grain!
  7. Evening! My friend has this fender J bass which has a little problem with the truss rod. When he goes to adjust it he says he can't get the tool in the rod, save for a little bit, to do so. He lives a while away so I cant have a decent look at it, as I have little experience with Fenders I cant really work it out. It was bought second hand so it could be broken as it doesnt look like any truss rod I've ever seen. heres a pic Any ideas?
  8. Thanks alot for the kind replies! Funny you mention a tuning fork dpm99, that was my inspiration! About the string pull, it is straight enough to funtion for each string as dpm99 pointed out, however I generally like totally dead straight strings. I dont really want to alter the shape of this headstock as I personally really like the proportions. You raise a good point about finishing the inside of the slot, something I had thought of, it may be a challenge but im sure i can think of something >.> This does sound very interesting, any pics? I'm lucky enough to have a laser cutting machine and I use these plans to make the templates so I do get a bit obsessed with it!! I used corel draw 12 for these ones if you where wondering. Possible neck combo maple/wenge|walnut|wenge\maple Would also look at carbon fibre strips running either side of the wenge laminates to stability as I like quite thin necks and the nice black pinstripe would add to contrast of the two darker woods.. Cheers!
  9. Beautiful, beautiful Black Limba you have there. definately one of my favourite looking woods. Also really like the tasteful maple pin stripes on the neck. I love, however, how people can find inspiration for guitar builds just about anywhere, why not a 5000 year old mummy!
  10. Thanks for the feed back guys! Thanks again, is that due to strength + practicality or aesthetics.. or both? Headstocks are often the hardest part to get right I find! Personally I'm sure it will be strong enough. I could, perhaps narrow the slit slightly so there is more meat however the thickest headstock the tuners drawn on the plan (schaller m6 minis) can be mounted to is 15.5mm according to the site which is quite chunky. And the headstock is quite small so adding the extra thickness shouldnt cause a balance issue.. I guess this is why we make prototypes eh! I am really interested to hear opinions on the headstock design itself though!
  11. Thanks! I see what you mean about the similarities, I think a lot of it is the continuous curve between the two horns on both of the designs! I have some straight grained bubinga I was thinking of using for the second one, interesting you say solid colour though. I do think that would suit it. Heres the bubinga anyway: Is your design online at all, I'd be interested to see it.
  12. Hey guys I'm a LONG time lurker here at the PG forums, after learning a lot from here I also want to make my modest contribution to this community so I'll start by posting a couple multi-scale designs I've been working on, both neck-throughs. I'm looking to start work on the prototype of one of these early in the new year and need some critique. Number 1 Number 2 They still need a bit of tweeking, for example the string angle after the nut on the lowest string is a bit wayward. I'm interested in peoples opinions though. Which do you prefer, what kind of wood combinations do you think would look good with these shapes. Thanks
  13. Looking good. As for the headstocks I'd say that I prefer the, as you put it (I actually think its quite original) more traditional one because its clean lines and the way that the inlayed piece of wood sits in relation to the shape is more pleasing and quite slick too imho. I like the truss rod cover as well. gjdk
