you can use a multi-meter. The multi-meter reads a connection when the string hits the problem fret. You clip one wire to the string (behind the nut), then the other probe touches each fret one by one until you find the buzzing one. Sometimes a little tricky doing the whole procedure by yourself, since you have to fret with one hand and pick with the other. My meter makes a distorted crackling beep when the problem fret is found.

could you not just put a cappo on the fret to save a hand? :D
