heugel
I'm planning on building a hybrid Stingray/Thunderbird with my step-son. So we've been researching body woods of the Stingray, but I keep coming up with a lot of different answers - Ash, Alder, Mahogheny seem to be the most common opinions. Unfortunately, the EB site just says "Selected Hardwoods". Any ideas on what they've used, especially the pre-84 models?
Phil Mailloux
I believe Stingrays use mostly ash and alder, definitely not mahogany. check this forum on EB MM basses, these guys know it all and a couple of EB employees hang out there, you'll probably find out a lot more. http://p219.ezboard.com/fthedudepitfrm30
erikbojerik
Our bass player just got one (5-string). Definitely ash body & maple neck. Don't know the vintage, but it's recent.
Phil Mailloux
I revisited the link I posted and from the info there there doesn't seem to be much alder actually. Forget my reference to alder. There was *some* basswood used in the pre-EB years but not that much. You can't go wrong with ash, they've been using it since the beginning and it's very obvious from pictures that most transparant or sunbursted stingrays are made of ash. lovekraft
From EBMM FAQ: ...Q: What woods does Music Man use for the body of a Stingray? A: In the past we used equal amounts of poplar or ash, and a small amount alder, we are using almost all ash now. We always use ash on translucent finishes. ... Dr. Jabsco
nowadays, they use ash on the full size bodys, alder on the new MM subs, and alder on the smaller body stingrays (forget thier name)
