Hey guys, for those of you who have built Warmoth guitars or put a Warmoth neck on a Fender-compatible body, how tight was the neck joint? I received my Warmoth neck today, but the fit between neck and body is very loose. The body is a Fender American Strat body. I was always told that, before you bolt the neck on, you should be able to pick up the guitar by the neck and not have it fall apart if the fit is good. I certainly can't do that. How big of a problem is this, and is there anything I can do to fix it? I'm not saying it's Warmoth's fault, it's probably the body. Most of the paint appears to have been removed from the side of the neck pocket, exposing the wood. I'm not familiar enough with Strats to know if that's normal or not. I do have some of this lying around:

Would it be a good idea to use this to build up the finish on the side of the neck pocket to get a better fit? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

A couple of things, first I've never used Warmoth products. However, I've used USA Custom Guitars bodies and necks, and I can literally pick up the body with the neck without the neck being bolted on. Second, I would suspect that the Warmoth neck is fine. I'm willing to bet that Fender allows looser tolerances than Warmoth does. Third, most folks believe that the best neck joint comes from having no paint at all in the neck cavity.

Where does that leave you? Well, where is the slop in the joint? Is it on the sides? You may just try making a very small shim.
