STAHLER Posted September 24, 2004 Report Posted September 24, 2004 I have just read that Buzz Feiten shims all his bolt on necks. To separate the neck from the body slightly. He says that the body and the neck have there own resonant frequencies and separating them allows each to resonate somewhat independently. This mod also creates a negative/reverse neck angle. He says that it increases volume and alters the low end. If I get time over weekend I am going to do this mod on one of my guitars to see if what he says is true, but i have always believed that a good snug neck joint is best. I will let you know how it goes and if i can hear the differance. Quote
javacody Posted September 25, 2004 Report Posted September 25, 2004 I've read about the same thing. Dan Erlewine has a forum on the LesPaulForum and seems to disagree with this. I suppose its worth a shot, but it's pretty much exactly opposite of what a vast majority of guitar techs believe. Let us know how it works out. Quote
STAHLER Posted September 25, 2004 Author Report Posted September 25, 2004 What is Dan Erlewine's forum called, I would like to read what he has to say about this. If I remember I will record the guitar before and after the mod and see if I can post the sound clips. Quote
javacody Posted September 25, 2004 Report Posted September 25, 2004 I don't remember the name of it, but you have to register at www.thelespaulforum.com to see it. Quote
ansil Posted September 26, 2004 Report Posted September 26, 2004 hmm are you talking about shiming the neck hypothetically like a lespaul tilt or tilting it so that it looks as if its tilting into the body. if so then i have done that and although it soundednice i couldnt' get the right balance of tilt and playability so for my money it was crap. as far as them resonating differently that is partially true try putting some of that free sample foam that they will mail you from the mattress company in there and it will help isolate some of the neck and body resonating together. but i didint like what i heard. but maybe ishould try that again. its been well over 12 years since i have done it. but as best i recal the best tone i ever got on a bolt on is when i glued them in permanently. also as far as the buzz feiten system goes i love it. but did you know that you can alter the tuning on a standard guitar ie how you tune it to make it play more intune across all the strings in all the possitions. i read about it back in 1993 when steve vai had it done to his guitars and said somehting about buzz telling him in the meantime heres how to tune the rest of your guitars till i finnish all your guitars for you. and it was basically tune the high e to pitch.. then tune the b string via the normal old school fifth fret routine. and 9th fret on the g string etc etc. until you end up with the 24th fret on the low e. man i didnt' believe it till i tried it and i took a freshly tuned "strobe tuned" guitar played it did some clips and then retuned it via this method and was amazed it was like a new guitar didnt' even sound the same it was fuller and clearer.. NO S**T. Quote
