GREGMW
I am starting to cut the nut for the guitar .I cut the slot with a ground down saw blade then I found some old strings I had and used them to widen the slot. They cut it ok but the hard part is keeping them straight.I am sure their would be some way to fit them into a small saw frame The other thing that I found useful was a set of Oxy welding Tip cleaning files I haven't finished the nut yet but I am hopeful this works Just some thoughts. soapbarstrat
when I made a steel nut, I took some pieces of guitar string, epoxied them to the thin edge of some popcicle (however the hell that's spelled) sticks, then dipped them in naptha, then into powdered abrasive, then final sanded the nut slots, to get them very smooth. I didn't actually use them to cut the slots. I had done that with hacksaw blades, small files, even my special nut files for a little bit. For the thinner strings, I can't really remember what I did. I might have cut little grooves in various thin pieces of metal, then after dipping in naptha, powdered abrasive would stick in those grooves and I'd do final sanding with them. Basically, I didn't want to use my special nut files a whole lot on steel, so I was coming up with these other weird tricks.
