24 Fret Strat Neck Scale

Recommended Posts

well i have finally gotten around to building my own strat. evidently my parents got me a squier strat so I am using the body to make a template. anywho I need to know what the scale length of the fretboard would be on a 24 fret strat cause mine has 22 and i dont know the extra length. also should I make the pickup setup a Single coil in the bridge Humbucker in the middle and a single in the neck or should it be single in the neck and 2 Humbuckers in bridge and middle slots? :D

The standard scale length on a Squier is 25.5". I'm not exactly sure what you are asking here, but if I were to make a template with a 24 fret guitar, I'd just extend the length of the 22 to accomodate 2 frets more. If you were to change the scale length of your neck to fit a 24 fret neck into a 22 fret neck pocket, the bridge placement would be off, so unless you want to go with that... Anyway, the extra two frets may mess with the placement of the neck pickup, but if you're going to make a pickguard, it won't matter.

As for the pickups, most people (if they have humbuckers) put them in the bridge position. This yields a more powerful and refined lead tone. The pickup placement is generally a personal factor that people experiment with, and select their favorite. I, personally would choose to use the second configuration you suggested, because I like a humbucker in the bridge position. With a humbucker in the middle, your guitar may end up better suited for rhythem playing (arguably).

Your neck pocket can be the same size if you add fretboard overhang. I'm assuming there's no overhang on the 22 fret model? If not, then all you have to do is end your neck and fret 22, and keep the fretboard about 25 frets long (24 frets + a bit so the board doesn't end RIGHT at the fret).

On the pickup issue, If you want one humbucker, I'd put it in the bridge. If you want two, I'd put them in the neck and bridge.

If you are planning on using the parts (pickguard from the squier it won't work, I see you are thinking on different pickup set up and that will be better, remember that by having 24 frets instead of 22 you will have a shorter distance between the end of the fret board and the bridge, take this into consideration when working on the set up. I don't know why you are doing the combos you are mentioning but I could suggest 2 humbuckers, or a humbucker in the bridge and a single on the neck, or 3 HR1 or JBjr , (singlecoil sized humbuckers) this will be a bit tight together but will sound good.

Check this page so that you can see what I mean by the distance to be shorter and the regular strat set up. 24 fret on strat
