JackyB
Or should I just order an SG body from warmoth?
Marzocchi705
I would think an SG would be a good first project, they look fairly simple (i havnt actaully built a guitar, but i know a fair bit about wood work) they have a beveld edge, provided you take your time itl be good, im sure. If you are still unsure about building your own body, get one from warmoth, there good bodys. Good luck with it whatever way you choose to go. Southpa
Its a good body style to begin with, tele is also an easy one. Just make sure you use an SG template for cutting the SG body. A lot of people assume that the SG body is symmetrical, it is NOT. If you look closely you will see that the bass side of the lower bout is 1/2" further off the centerline than the treble side. Its very subtle but I guess thats part of what makes the shape so appealing, . Edited December 15, 2004 by Southpa
Nalo1022
a tele body would be pretty easy its a flat top the edes are wide and dont have any tight curves and its a classic
Maiden69
I will say that an SG will be a nice 1st, the only difficult part is the carving on the body, other than that the figure is quite simple.
JackyB
Okay the SG sounds like a go. I also considered doing a Tele-shaped guitar with SG components (mahogany body, SG pickups, wiring, etc.) But I really like how SGs look. I think I'll just order a mohogany blank and maybe I'll be able to make up my mind before it arrives. Where would be a good place to check for SG templates? I like SG's because they have a certain "radical" look to them, but they're not over-the-top like Explorers.
Marzocchi705
I used to hate Tele's too, then i played one. I used to like SG's till i played one, i couldnt gel with it like my Les Paul, i dont know why, they have the same bridge and neck. Thers something that just doesnt work for me in SG's. PerryL
The Necks on Both, the Tele and SG are quite meaty for me, so I looked at the LTD Viper and their necks were bulky also. I think the perfect marriage would be an Ibanez Style Neck with The Viper Body. Bolt on Neck of course, since the bolt's are much easier for the first time builder rather than a set neck like SG's.
