Wood Pickup Covers

stop trying to just duplicate stuff.

if you dont know how something is attached, or made. MAKE your own, and let other people ask YOU how XXX's covers are made and where can they get them.

there is no set rules on something simple like that. and since your going to be making them, you have a full range of possibilities.

dont let others traditional ways make you think you have to do them that way.

experiment, thats how things are made. have fun with it and just dont copy!

Seeing as nothing i have built or thought of building is in any way a duplication or anything... i dont get what the heck ur talking about. Ok if i had a question about attaching the neck. and there are 3 options... one of them would be copying? ... im just curious as to the current methods. , as i am sure there are probably only so many ways to do it. i am curious of peoples methods. i did not say i was going to copy anything. I dunno. maybe it was just how it was typed, but It seemed like you were accusing me of trying to copy something. I am simply curious about things like how thick they have to be, does the plastic have to be removed? things like that. so i dont know where u got the idea i was copying anything. Im not trying to be jerk, just want to let u know where im coming from. why i wanted to know. what i still dont know B) but yeah man, im trying to be as original as i can. :D

im not accusing you of trying to copy anything.

just that if anything needs a tutorial, THIS process doesnt.

all you have to worry about is any magnetic material between the strings and pole pieces. you can use any wood, plastic, non-ferrous metal that i know of.

im just saying youve got alot of possibilites for this situation, so just throw out all the rules of how people have normally done it and go at it.

I would disagree. For example, aluminum is used for shielding magnets on studio (audio) monitors because it is non-magnetic. If a couple layers of 1/16" aluminum can shield other devices from a 20oz magnet, then an aluminum cover would have a negative affect on a pickup... unless you drill holes in the cover, directly over each pole. Drilling holes in the cover may seem to fall into the "well-duh" category, but it should be mentioned.

I think Fender's Tele covers are Nickle-Silver; both metals will conduct magnetism, so they will work... although they will affect the magnetic fields, thereby changing the response/tone a little.

I was wondering if anyone had information on wood pickup covers? Is it simply a thin box on top of the pickup? Do you have to modify the pickup at all? How is it held in place?

It depends on the style of cover. Some have tabs with holes (ears) so the covers can be attached with the pickup. Other are attached with solder. (Cruising around Stew-Mac's web site will provide all sorts of useful info.)
