Speaker Selection

within the next couple of days i should be receiving the power tubes for the alamo bass amp head that i'm restoring. i'm going to have to build a speaker cabinet for it and need a question answered before i start.

when all you have is the amp's output rating, in this case 110watts, how do you determine the speaker needs. calculating the total impedence of two to four speakers and the parallel or series or combination wiring is pretty straightforward math but how do determine the total impedence that your shooting for. i re-read all of the speaker sections in all of the books that i purchased and none of them address this question. i've found precious little info on the amp itself and none on the speakers used.

thanks

That can be pretty hard to figure out, if you have a schematic for it, it's almost always listed on the schematic.

If you don't, then 8 ohms is a pretty safe bet to shoot for, although not always correct.

I have an old M-4 Magnatone that is rated for 4 ohms, and an M-10 that is rated for 16 ohms. But most all of my other old amps that use 2 power tubes are 8 ohms, even the really old ones ('40's)

You can't really go wrong with using 8 ohms as your target point, as most old amps can handle a 100% mismatch OK.
