Will This Damage A Drill Press Chuck?

I was wondering if anyone can offer any advice as to weather or not chucking up a threaded shaft into a drill chuck could be a potential problem. I have some sanding drums and I have made some little wheels for the bottom (like a robosander) but the added thickness of the wheel leaves me no thread left on the shaft to attach the nut. I was hoping that I could just go get some bolts the right size and use those instead, as that is essentially what is on there now. I'm a little leary about weather or not the threads of the bolt will chew up the chuck or cause the drum to spin or what not. Any advice? Thanks!
