Paul Marossy Posted January 6, 2005 Report Posted January 6, 2005 (edited) I am refinishing a Jackson/Charvel bass. It's this metallic blue color that I just don't like. So I've been doing the paint stripper thing. Something rather unexpected was below the blue paint - a white plastic like substance! Fiberglass resin maybe?! It kind of looks like what boats are made of and it's about 1/32" thick. Between the wood and the white stuff looks like some kind of whitish primer or something. Anyhow, is that how their guitars are normally finished? I thought it was kind of odd, and certainly unexpected. I think it's a basswood body, so maybe it's an attempt at getting a nice smooth finish? I'm just going to repaint it, but I sure am curious about this! Edited January 6, 2005 by Paul Marossy Quote
Paul Marossy Posted January 8, 2005 Author Report Posted January 8, 2005 Well, I have come to the conclusion that it's coated with some sort of plastic resin before painting. It smells exactly like a plastic resin when sanded. Quote
