silktoxic
hi. this is my first time posting but have been reading for awhile but obviously not enough. i recently decided to build my first guitar. i purchased a rr flying v style body and neck off ebay for my first project. i realize now that i have the wrong neck. i bought a 24 fret neck instead of a 22. but my problem is just tonight i realized that the neck pocket isn't straight. it is 2 3/16 at the back and 2 1/16 at the front. how do i know which side to widen to make sure the neck is straight and square and what do i use seeing how the body is already finished. any help is greatly appreciated. i am totaly new at this. thank you
doug
The neck pocket is supposed to be like that because the neck tapers from the last fret to the nut. yep, you got the wrong neck. maybe someone else will have an idea how to make it work. some of the body has to be removed for the neck to be mounted closer to the bridge. this will also make the neck pocket effectively too wide as it is right now. set the neck on top of the body so that it lines up with the scale length. you'll see what i mean, and you can see how wide you might need shims. honestly, if the body is nice find a different neck and sell the one you have now. -Doug
westhemann
it is supposed to be wider at the FRONT(closest to the bridge),not the other way around
silktoxic
sorry. that is the way it is, wider at the bridge. i'd rather not do anything to the body. does a 22 fret neck have different dimensions at the heel then a 24 fret? does anyone know of a good place to buy a neck from? Setch
it is supposed to be wider at the FRONT(closest to the bridge),not the other way around ← How do you figure that is the Front?! The front is the open end, the back is what the end of the neck sits against... or am I just contrary? I see a poll coming up... Cast your vote here. doug
silktoxic- they may be pretty close. there is no hard fast "standard" but 2 3/16 at the widest part of the neck heel is very common. that's why you can't really change what you have because it messes up the geometry. it's like a stack of styrofoam cups, if you lift one out, the smallest end doesn't fill the space in the opening. -Doug
