baze7
If I build a neck, what tools are a must?
Guitarfrenzy
What kind of guitar neck are you making? Angled headstock vs Straight headstock? Glued neck vs. bolted? You need to be more specific in order to know exactly what you need, but generally a bandsaw, router, sanders, and templates are all you need. You can either make your own templates or buy them, but to do the job right you'll need some guideline.

Guitarfrenzy
Check out my pictorial I did earlier in the year, it describes every step of making a Fender style neck. Making a Neck I basically just used a drill press, router, bandsaw, clamps, glue, and robo-sander attachment to make the complete neck. You can also. Hope this helps. silvertonessuckbutigotone
here's a list of what im using on my neck that im starting soon 1. Rasp 2. File 3. Sand paper 4. Saw of some sort (no circular blades or chain saws :b ) 5. Drill Press 6. Milling machine (this can be substituted with a router, the only reason I have access to one is becasue my dad owns a machine shop). 7. Clamps 8. Power Sander (robo sander is the best) is help ful but not nessecary. hope this helps, I don't really know what else I'll need seeing as I havent started yet. CudBucket
Definitely, build. If you want to build guitars, you should learn to build a neck.
erikbojerik
If you want to play it right away and you're happy with off-the-shelf necks, buy. If you find you prefer something different (back contour, thin/jumbo frets, a radius that isn't 12" or 9.5", wood choice) then build. You'll build one eventually...why not now? 32251
If you are wanting a tele neck, then just buy one. There are so many out there and so reasonable in price. I have built 30 guitars from raw lumber. When I built my tele style instrument, I did not even think twice about building the neck, why?? You can buy one, have it delivered in a few days and bolt it on---duh.
Bill-Murray
As the old saying goes "The journey is the destination." I just want you guys to think about that for a while.
