otgordin
Hi, I just ordered replacement pickups for my guitar. Right now i have pickups with nickel covers. Howver, my new ones aren't available with covers. Will getting aftermarket covers change the tone? And if so are there any metal-lookin covers available that won't change the sound? Thanks -Vadim
GregP
Most people claim that pickup covers WILL change the sound a little. Also, if you go aftermarket, you'll probably (but not definitely) have to re-pot them to help quell harmonic squeal. But... the tone thing is questionable and certainly not enough of an issue when compared to the greater question of-- does your guitar seem to be screaming for metal pickup covers? If it is, then you have no choice my friend! There's no particular brand that will alter your sound any more or less. Greg
rockthe40
IMO covered humbuckers look MUCH better. but uh i dont think it will affect tone much if at all
Jon Bell
Removing the covers will add a bit of high end to the tone, it's very subtle though. Pickups without covers are often set a bit closer to the strings too, this will also affect the tone and outout.
thedoctor
What kind of pickups are you getting that aren't available with covers? The ones I can think of won't even work with aftermarket covers.
