Hey Kevan...do You Give Everyone Such A...

I have nothing against the Mod or the person that posted the original question.  I just like being part of a clean, professional board where folks treat each other with respect and don't act like children.

1. Kevans Post:  His first post to Filthy was terse.  Come on.. It's not hard to read the frustration in there.  He could have simply said something like "Hey man, there are a ton of threads on this and out bandwidth is limited.  Please use the search. Thread closed" and you wouldn't have heard a word from the person.

2.  Filthy:  His response to the thread closing was horribly out of line.  He's a perfect example of an internet hothead that likes to get negative threads started.  There are a million of em out there and I think they probably waste almost as much bandwidth as spam.  He felt like he was wronged and instead of dealing with it civily, he decided to start a fight.

Anyway, an ounce of prevention (in proactively trying NOT to come off sounding ugly) by the mods can save numerous threads like this.  Is it fair that you have to be nice to some idiot that asks a stupid question?  no.. but you all are basically the "customer service" face for a forum and you set the tone for how people act and treat each other, so sometimes you just have to suck it up and not type what you are thinking :D

Maybe a new feature for this forum software would be a mod translation program where the mod could type "Listen you freakin dumba$$.. use the @#%$@ search button.. " which would kindly be translated to "Please direct your attention to the search feature"  lol..

Anyway,  thanks to the mods for what you do, I don't envy you in the least - you all make this board a great place to come for information, and thanks to the vast majority of all you other members that don't get your feelings hurt and lash out on the occasion you get your hand slapped for not doing your homework :D  it's a rite of passage is it not?

I agree with that wholeheartedly.

I figured I'd answer a few questions...

Erik, Sepultura and, Dan D:

The "THREAD CLOSED" is done like it is for a many reasons. It's not meant as a "dis" or a "rip" or a "you're an idiot so you get bold, red letters". Admin editing/thread closing type is usually in red, to diferentiate it from standard posts. I've been doing it here for years, and this is the first time feelings were hurt over it. Trying to psychoanalyze an online forum member via their posts is like trying to find a video of Paris Hilton clothed.

Trust me- if we did it in black, you'd have guys screaming "I got big, bold black letters saying my thread was closed! Nice warm welcome, jerks!".

There's no winning...unless maybe it's purple.

Mledbetter: Your #1 doesn't work. It's been tried both "ginger & spice and everything nice" and "lay down the law". That's the other problem with your suggested Moderator Translator- if you ASK someone to do something, they'll take offense. If you TELL someone to do something, they'll take offense. Yes- even if it's Carmen Electra dressed in SaranWrap asking/telling them to do it.

I'm still looking for the 'terse' part of my post over there. Was it that I paraphrased HIS title in my posting? Now I'm a bad guy because someone doesn't think before they type?

...and regarding the "ounce of prevention..." line:

Should Admin/Mods PM individuals about the Search feature and explain to them how to use it?

No, and I'll tell you why- simple education. If I can teach 200 people something with one post, that saves me 199 PM's.

Sorry Digideus, that's my theory and I'm stickin' to it. LOL (BTW- It's YOUR forum; not mine. I'm just here to keep LGM from posting hundreds of 'inlay porn' pics.)

..and lastly (I'm such a bad member for not even answering the initial question asked): Do I greet all members like that?

Nope. Only the special ones.

Hey Marz- in that pic you posted on the first page, did you notice that "before" is spelled incorrectly? :D

Scott- You know me better than that. I didn't even get to the "pffffsssssttt" part of opening the can. :D

:D One of the major assumptions involved in running this board is that the participants, while not necessarily adults, are capable of functiioning at a basic adult level. That means no spam or vile language, but it doesn't mean that anyone should expect to be spoonfed or have his diapers changed - Kevan did his job ( probably more politely than I would have given the circumstances), and babycakes got his knickers all knotted up and went off. :DKevan has nothing to aplogize for! You may reasonably expect not to be exposed to offensive material here, but you can't expect to never be offended! if somebody calls you on your laziness, suck it up like a grownup, and get on with your life! Now, everybody stop whining about how badly the poor, defenseless noobs get treated, and for the love of (insert personal diety here), find the Search button!

Remember this formula: (Basic question asked hundreds of times before) + (No attempt to search) + (Posting said question in the wrong place) + (Indicating that you know that the question has been previously asked and answered) = Chiding from a Mod - it should work every time! B)

Now these types of posts are funny...

You seem to have quite a lot to say about me in a negative light...why is that?...I find it hard to believe that someone like you would just keep their mouth shut if the same thing had happened to you...don't tell me that you would because you've taken 3 or 4 shots at me in your last post.

So Kevan did his job more politely than you would have under the circumstances huh?

Damn...good thing I didn't ask how to do a quilt job huh?...so tell me...other than asking a question that had been asked before...what exactly did I do that warranted an even tougher answer than Kevan had given me?

I mean...how would YOU have handled it?

The bottom line is this...

Babycakes (Isn't the internet wonderful...it's a magical place where someone can sit behind the anonimity of a keyboard and call someone else names, and then profess their "Adultness" all in the same post...) actually got his knickers all knotted up because...

I thought this was an open forum.

I don't know Kevan like the rest of you do...while he may dole out tough love type responces to everyone that posts here already...I certainly wan't expecting to get one...especially in a guitar oriented forum...every other one I've ever posted in...people go totally the other way than Kevan did in an attempt to be nice.

I'm not much of a lurker...I had a question I wanted to ask...I also wanted to introduce myself to the forum...and I wanted to get some tips...If i had wanted to use a FAQ...that's what I would have done...but I didn't need to use a FAQ...BECAUSE I HAD FOUND A REALLY COOL GUITAR FORUM...!...HEY...!!!...I KNOW!!!!...I'LL ASK THEM THE QUESTION!...Sheeeeesh!

I don't know about the rest of you...but...If someone goes hard on me the first meeting we ever have out of the gate...well...I'm going to go hard right back...all he had to have done was tell me that I might find the answer by using the search function next time...and I would have said no problem and went on about my business.

I just wasn't expecting that kind of response from a fellow musician...I probably could have reacted in a different way...but...It just pissed me off.

I did get my question answered...to those that addressed it...Thank you very much B)

Now...if you want to Ban me...then go ahead...I've gotten along for quite a number of years without posting on your forum...I can probably make it the rest of my life without posting on it ever again...however...as I said before...I have some things to possibly contribute here...it DOES seem like an interesting forum...and maybe we can chalk it up as something that got a little out of hand on both sides and move along.

L8.

WILL SOMEONE *PUHLEASE* SHOW ME (and everyone else here) WHERE I WAS HARSH/MEAN/NASTY/UNKIND/OVER THE TOP/UNFRIENDLY/UNHELPFUL/UNPROFESSIONAL/ANYTHING OTHER THAN DECENT IN THAT POST?!!?!!?

(That time I'm screaming...LOL)

It's rhetorical, so don't bother with an answer. Thanks.

Filthy- I don't want to be accused of being soft on rules violators (now there's a fruitless search. LMAO), so....I'm going to close your "#2" account. In the meantime, I'm going to get with the site owner and the other mods and figure out what we want to do regarding your plethora of rules violations within this thread. Your other account will remain working until further notice.

Oh, and for the record, I'm not anonymous. Kevan is really my name. It's been my online 'ID' since, oh....1989 or so.

Speaking of which....."Filthy McNasty"?

Touche' (again).

"If you're 'sure this has been asked a million times....', then try a SEARCH in the Inlays/Finishing topic (where this question should have been posted initially).

THREAD CLOSED."

I'm still trying to figure out what is so harsh/bad/rude/mean about the above post...

It's fairly straight forward.

If that is considered "tough love", I wouldn't want to be in the same room as Kevan and a jar of Vaseline when he's being really nice!

:D

Now, let's get back to the party!

:D

You can put banners above the topics on this type of forum, it may be an idea to make one with big letters sayin 'please use search function before poting questions'- or something along those lines just so any new members dotn make the same mistakes

What is so hard about just ignoring the post. Happens to me all the time, I post a topic and a message and 90% of the replies don't even reply about what I was asking or posting. Instead of people worrying about forum etiquette, which is basically subjective, just ignore it. If someone breaks a rule, delete the post. I see people ask REALLY STUPID questions, and yes there is such a thing as a stupid question, and I just laugh to myself and ignore it. If someone wants to answer it, let them, otherwise leave it alone. I understand that as a mod you all have a lot to worry about on this forum but you gotta understand that most of you have been working with guitars for years, at some point in time you were new also so if the burden that comes with experience of hearing the same question over and over, or having to listen to the voice of inexperience really gets to you then you shouldn't be a mod. Not to take any sides in this matter, but some of the people on this forum sometimes make me feel like they only want experienced guitar builders in here. But you have to realize that to be a teacher, which is what the forum is all about, you need to accept the responsibility and teach. This is just about the general way this forum is. I check this forum everyday so don't take what I am saying to be a bad thing, just a difference in opinion on how things are sometimes on forums.

65 posts and counting that have nothing to do with building guitars.. why don't we close this thread :D

feelings hurt, damage done, sides explained, points argued, consensus still non-existent, moderating this forum is still not my responsibility and is in perfectly capable hands..

I'm happy to forget this thread even exists but it keeps popping back up to the top of the list.. I promist I won't post anymore here.. twice is enough.. now i'm just contributing to the problem..

cheers
