nollock
Does bubinga need any special preperation for gluing? cheers, chris
Scott Rosenberger
Just give each piece a couple of swipes with 100 grit sand paper, then right before glueing wipe each piece with Acetone to get rid of any oils on the surface that would prevent good adhesion
nollock
Would cellulose thinners do the same job? Is either of them safer to use? Just I can pinch some cellulose thinners from my brother. cheers, chris
Scott Rosenberger
I haven't a clue what Cellulose Thinners are. If it's laquer thinner or something then yes it will be fine. Side note, Acetone is also commonly called Finger Nail Poilsh Remover. Go pinch some from your woman
nollock
Yeah i think its for celulose car paint, tried it and it evaporates off very quickly, couple of minutes tops. cheers, chris
bassman
I am not challenging Scotts advice, it is good advice for oily woods. I do the same for cocobolo, but I have never wiped down bubinga before glueing and I have never had adhesion problems with it before. That doesn't mean YOU shouldn't wipe it down first, I just wanted to let you know that it seems to glue well and hold up well.
erikbojerik
The oil content can vary widely from piece to piece...wipe it down anyway, just to be safe. I do believe nail polish remover has oils in it & stuff, stuff to make your cuticles nice, depending on the brand I guess. You don't want to add anything when you wipe...I'd just use actone or naptha. Make sure it is dead dry before you add the glue.
Maiden69
out of the 2 I will recomend naphta, it is soooo goood for that stuff, and evaporates quickly. Also burns nice and blue!!! Weres Bevis when you need him... Fire fire!!!!heh heh!!
